THE MICH~IGAN DAILY Im P . _ LJ 4 First Baseman Roman Signs igei K K~Slugger T o Receive About $30,000; Will Report to Birmingham in Month SGi4 I Bonus Pac I I t 1 11. Major League Standings By TOM WITECKI Michigan baseball Captain Bill Roman signed ah estimated $30,- 000 bonus contract with the De- troit Tigers yesterday. The Wolverine first baseman was officially signed to a contract with the Tigers top farm club, Denver of the American Associ- ation, but will start his profes- sional career on option to Birm- ingham of the Southern Associa- tion. Roman had just completed his, third and final season as the Wolverines regular first baseman. He batted .340 in Big Ten play and had a .333 overall average, which must have impressed the Tigers. Another point that made Ro- man appealing to the pros was the .359 batting average, he piled up in the South Dakota Basin League last summer. The league, which serves as a breeding ground for the top collegiate players, has produced several bonus signees during the past few years. Michigan Coach Don Lund called Roman "A fine team cap- tain and a good looking pro pros- pect." He added, "Bill has always been a fine defensive player and he has improved a lot this season both on the base paths and at the plate. If he continues to improve at the plate, he could go all the way to the top."
