VINE MIxchIAN DAIL.Y Jesse Owens' Greatest Day By The Associated Press One of the greatest legends in < sports history was created in Ann Arbor 25 years ago today. On May 25, 1935; at the Univer- sity of Michigan's Ferry Field, a slender young Negro named Jesse Owens rocked the sports world when he flashed to three new world's records and tied a fourth. Owens, then just a 21-year-old Ohio State sophomore competing s in his first Big Ten Track Meet, cracked world marks in the 220- yard dash and low hurdles and' the broad jump, while tying the world record in the 100-yard dash. Disbelief As 10,000 fans watched in stun- ned disbelief;, the smooth-running cinder whiz ignited his amazing, drama-packed 45-minute perform- ance by tying Frank Wykoff's world record; of 9.4 seconds in the. century. Ten .minutes later, Owens took his first-and only broad jump of the day, catapulting 26' 8%" to break the world mark by more than half a foot. His third effort was a 20.3 clocking in the, 220-yard dash- three-tenths of a second under. the previous record. The roar of the crowd grew in intensity as each new record was announced. Tension and excite- ment reached electrifying pro- portions as Owens lined up for his fourth event of the day, the 220-yard low hurdles. The "ebony antelope" respond- ed with his third world record of the afternoon as he shaved twos 'M' 'Lif ter' Gains iThir In', TourneyD/% Gary Lewis, Michigan's only representative to the National Junior Weightlifting Champion- ship in Schenectady, New York, last Saturday, finished third in the 132 pound class. Lewis lifted a total weight of 635 pounds to place third in the national meet. He pressed 205, snatched 185 and lifted 245 in the, clean and jerk. .lirk Krell of Cleveland, Ohio, aibo competing in the 132 pound division, set a record for the Jun- ior Championships with a lift of 269% pounds in the clean and jerk. Lewis is hoping to go to the Senior National Championships which will be June 12 and 12 in Cleveland. This meet will also feature the judging for the Mr. America Contest. Lewis' performance in Schen- ectady is a tribute to the weight-j lifting. program instituted by the Michigan I-M department. The men down there have hopes that more Michigan "lifters" will be able to represent Michigan with equally fine efforts in the future. fifth of a second from the pre- existing mark with a time of 22.6. Owens' broad jump-mark, which has withstood the assaults of thousands during the past quar- ter century, is the only one of those famous marks still standing. Phil Diamond, now a retired Ann Arbor businessman who served as head timer at the Big Ten meet on that historic day, said there was no doubt about any of Owen's records. 'Same Times' "All three watches caught Ow- ens in the exact same times for the 100- and 220-yard dashes," Diamond said. "In fact, in the 100-yard event all three were just a fraction over 9.3 seconds." Diamond explained that Michi- gan traditionally has used a con- servative timing method, based on when the lower portion of a run- ner's body crosses the finish line, instead of the chest which usually leans forward. "You can talk all you want about 9.3 hundred's today," Dia- mond said. "No one has ever run 100 yards faster than Owens did that day." Different Times He added that three different times were recorded in the hur- dles, but that Owens' mark had to go into the record book as the slowest of the three to qualify as a new record. Owens, now at 46 a Chicago disc jockey and .sports specialist for the Illinois Youth Commis- sion, said an ailing back almost kept him out of the :meet and that only at the last minute did he decide to enter. Larry Snyder, who stillisOhio State's track coach, observed: "There never was or has been anything like that performance. Owens, combining an ability to relax with the qualities of a great sprinter, astounded the world." LECORD HOLDER-Jesse Owens appears as he must have looked 25 years ago today when he broke liree world records and tied a fourth here at Ferry Field in a Big Ten Track Meet. His broad jump ecord of 26'8:/" still stands as a world mark, while his track records have since been tied or broken. w ~ ,. . r ..". r...:"rr.":".:Y:::":'":"."...,",r."lY :y, - y1 } l ;- l {:,r,";(i !} { .;": iy ,rrO t: n wh : rr ti v :: r.:" J'" " h JY :' t":YWX'. r .:YI:J".'.".' ^: ::"l."....:xS;.}".".;."r,.}': {"X.i: r...:7:. ..:. r .."... r .
