Largest amount came from the estate of Mildred Weed Goodrich. The Regents accepted $341,714.20 representing the cash portion of the University's distributive share of the estate. Three equal endow- ment funds will be established with the money. One of these will be the Ernest Weed Goodrich Re- search Fund with income to be used for study of various strains of streptococci, and other medical research. Another will be the Mildred G o o d r i c h Scholarship Fund, income from which is to be used for the scholarships in engi- neering. The third fund will be the Ernest P. Goodrich Research, Fund with the income to be used for research in engineering. The U-M also will receive securities from the estate which are to be divided equally among the three funds. From the Carnegie Corporation of New York the Regents accepted $72,000 in two grants. A $57,000 grant is for research on the econo- mic consequences of disarmament, and one of $15,000 represents the final payment on a grant for the support of the Center for Japa- nese Studies. There were two grants from the National Fund for Medical Edu- cation, with one of $59,640 for general support of the Medical School's educational program. The second grant was for $2,000 and represents the first payment on a grant of $7,500 for medical re- search. The Inter-University Committee on Travel Grants, has given $19,- 800 to establish the Russian Study Tour Fund under the direction of Prof. Deming Brown. This fund is. to provide an intensive course in third-year Russian to a group of 20 undergraduate students who will be selected from the Ameri- can college student body at large after which these students will travel in the Soviet Union for a month of - additional language training. The project is aimed at determining the linquistic achie- vement of the group before and after the tour. From American Cancer Society, Michigan Division, Inc., the Re- gents accepted $13,861.57 from the society's Montcalm County Divi- sion for The University of Michi- gan Cancer Research Institute. Dow Chemical Company .has; made a grant of $11,550 repre- senting the final payment on a five-year program .for support of research on insects. There were four contributions to the Edgar A. Kahn Neurosur- gery Fund with $5,000 coming from the Aaron MeIxdelson Trusts, (representing the second annual installment on a $15,000 grant), $200 from the Holter Company, $166.16 from Dr. Richard C. Sch- neider and $50 from Arthur M. Rickel. There were three grants total- ing $4,500 for the Pharmacy Re- search Bu11 d i n g Construction Fund. John Helfman gave $2,500; Squibb Institute for Medical Re- search gave $1,000; and Walgreen; Drug Stores also gave $1,000. Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has given $3,825 to establish fellow- ships for engineers in the first year of graduate study. From the American Association for the Comparative Study of Law, Ins., the Regents accepted $3,000 to provide clerical assist- ance in the publication of the Comparative Law Journal. Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation has given $2,500 for a graduate fellowship in the field of business administration. Upjohn Company has made a grant of $2,400 for research in bacteriology by Dr. Arthur G. Johnson. Douglas Aircraft Company, Inc. has given a total of $2,350 with $750 for an undergraduate schol- arship and $1,600 for a fellowship in engineering. The Regents accepted $1,900 from Research Corporation as a grant in aid for the research pro- gram of Michael M. Martins, an instructor in chemistry, in reac- tions of 1, 3 Dialkoxy Radicals. This research is designed to test the possibility of interconversion of high energy intermediates - Ray L; Potter has given $1,875 for the Clarence M. Burton Memo- rial Scholarship. From the Lower Michigan Pulp- wood Research Association, Inc., the Regents accepted $1,541 repre- senting the second quarterly pay- ment for research by the School of Natural Resources. Hoffman - LaRoche Inc. has given $1,500 for a study of Tarac- tan in the treatment of patients with symptoms of depression. There were grants totalling $1,- 300 made for the Faculty Research Fund in Personnel Administration.. The donors were: Detroit Bank and Trust Co., $350; Michigan Bell Telephone Co., $500; Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co., $250; and King-Seeley Division of King- Seeley Corp., $200. From Hartz Mountain Products Corporation the Regents accepted $1,000 to support the publications and distribution of "Comparative Medicine in Transition," the pro- ceedings of the Institute of Veter- inary Public Health Practice which was held at the U-M School of Public Health. An anonymous donor has given $1,000 to establish the Olive Cox Sleeper Memorial Fund for the aid of students in the College of Archi- tecture and Design.
