U0 1960' THlE M~IHIGA A I~L PAGE F By PATRIC BOLOGNESI Under the supervision of the. Ann Arbor Council of Churches, HOME has as its goal the estab- lishment of equal housing oppor- tunities for all residents of this city, regardless of race, national- ity, or religion. In fact, the present organization derives its name, HOME, from the first letters of the words which state its goal, Housing Opportuni- ties Made Equal. HOME is an outgrowth of a pro- Ject set up by students from the Human Relations Board of the University and Members of the Ann Arbor Council of Churches. House Minorities When the group was organized in September of 1959, it was known as the Hospitality Com- mittee, a functioning part of the Council of Churches. The specific purpose of the committee was to help those people who, for various reasons of minority status, might have difficulty finding housing in Ann Arbor. With the cooperation of the University, the committee set up offices in Lane Hall. Here volun- teer workers assisted students, faculty, and University personnel in securing dwelling units for themselves and their families. When the results of the project were reported to the Human Rights Commission, they were found to be so satisfactory that the commission requested the service be carried on indefinitely, and HOME had its beginning. Extends Services At the request of the Human Rights Commission, Home has ex- tended its services to include not only rentals of dwellings but also the sale of housing units. Another undertaking of HOME is circulating the Covenant of Open Occupancy. This document is a petition pledging those who sign it to "refuse to conform to racial discrimination in housing." "The organization has a need for more volunteers to work with the HOME project. We feel there are many people of good-will who share in the goals qf HOME and might have time td give to this endeavor if it were known that their services would be welcomed," said Mrs. Dorwin Cartwright, a member of the executive com- mittee. "Much of the work of HOME depends on the support and ac- tivity of concerned volunteers. All of the people who are working for this project believe that the goals of equal housing opportunities are ones which can be attained in Ann Arbor," Mrs Cartwright said. . k MUSICAL MDSE., RADIOS, REPAIRS TRANS ISTOR RADIOS $24.95 and up Picked for dependability and performance. Public Relations A public relations campaign and recruitment drive .will cost $1,000. This will cover the cost of print- ing a newsletter and flier explain- ing the Council and mailing it to incoming freshmen and transfer students. Allocations of $1,000 are also made for the Election Committee and Committee on Membership. The Election Committee pays for announcements in The Daily, pos- ter boards, platform statements, and the costs of counting ballots on election nights. Candidates are charged a nominal fee to cover the cost of printing ballots. The newly established Com- mittee on Membership will be con- sidering discrimination in organi- zations and has received its allo- cation for initial expenses and for operating next year. NSA Costs Costs related to the National Student Association will total $2,025 and the $225 dues and $1,700 for delegates to the national and regional conferences. This summer 14 persons will be sent to the conference in Minneapolis. Other expenditures include $2,000 'for telephones, postage, supplies and maintenance, $1,200 for general expenses of the staff, $450 for expenses of the Interna- tional Coordinating Board and $900 for the Education Committee. All money is channeled through the Office of Student Organiza- tions which keeps a record in addition to the one kept by the Council Finance Committee. Approve Expenses The treasurer may authorize expenses up to $30, the committee those up to $75 and any expendi- tures above this amount must be approved by the Council. The carryover from this year is expected to be approximately $1,000. The financial report showed a cash balance of $3,167.54 at the end of March. The budget, as Hanson pointed out, is only a paper guide and allocations may or may not be totally used.
