Colleges and universities
- throughout the country are being
invited to apply for participation
in the National Defense Student
Loan Program during the 1960-61
academic year, the United States
Office of Education announced
recently.
The Student Loan Program, au-
thorized under the National De-
fense Education Act, is designed
to provide loans to high school
seniors planning to enter college
and to college students in need of
financial assistance 'to continue
their education.
Currently participating in the
Program are 1,360 institutions of
higher education, with full-time
enrollments of more than 2 mil-
lion students, or about 85 per cent
of the total full-time enrollment
in all colleges and universities.
Institutions interested in- 'par-
ticipating in the Program during
1960-61 should submit applica-
tions by May 15, and no later
than June 30 to be eligible to
receive funds from fiscal year 1961
appropriations. Application forms
have been mailed to all partici-
pating colleges, and are available
to non-participating institutions
on request.
Participating colleges and uni-
versities have received a total of
$70.2 million in Federal loan funds
since the Program was launched
in February 1959. As of February
29, 1960, over 125,000 loans total-
ling $55 million had been ap-
proved by the 1,360 participating
institutions.
James W. Moore, formerly Di-
rector of the California State
Scholarship Program, is Chief of
the Student Loan Program.

PEER GYNT-John Gregory, right, runs through a scene in "Peer Gynt" which recently completed
its run at Detroit's Vanguard Playhouse. The Playhouse is housed in a former foreign film theatre and
is run by professional actors hoping to establish a resident theatre in Detroit.

By BEATRICE TEODORO
"We're trying to bridge a 20-year
gap in establishing a resident pro-
fessional t h e a t r e," Christopher
Flynn, business manager of De-.
troit's Vanguard Playhouse said.
At present, the only professional
theatre," he explained. Heavy with
in Detroit is traveling "package
big name stars, these "packages"
are certain commercial successes.
But Flynn believes that the pub-
lic would like to see other works
also.
Found Playhouse
Vanguard Playhouse was found-
ed on that premise one a half
years ago by a Detroit attorney.
In December, 1959, it presented
its first production, Shaw's "Don
Juan." The next production was
Ibsen's "Peer Gynt" and now play-
ing is the Christopher Fry trans-
lation of "Ring Around the Moon."
The Playhouse hopes to produce
classic works, both .modern and
traditional, in the fall-to-spring
season. In the summer, it plans to
approach lighter works, such as
"The Boyfriend" which opens
June 7.
Another function of the theatre
is to provide Detroit with a pro-
fessionally trained resident the-
atre. For most potential actors in
the Midwest it is now necessary

to go to the East or West Coast to
perform professionally.
Cast Professional
In contrast, all but three of the
Vanguard cast are professionals
from the Detroit area, Flynn said,
and the rest are beginning to feel
like Detroit citizens. They want
to establish themselves in Detroit,
he added, because it has people,
potential financial support, and
"no longer wants to be known on-
ly as the Motor City."
This summer, Vanguard wants
to establish a children's theatre
offering two four-week courses
with training in creative dramat-
ics, music and interpretive move-
ment. Also in the planning stage
is an apprentice program, offer-
ing budding young actors practi-
cal experience in professional
theatre.
Problems in Casting
With a small cast drawn from
professionals in the area, the Play-
house sometimes runs into casting
problems.
There is a scarcity of men be-
tween 30 and 45, and also very
few women who will play mother's
role, Flynn said. In the present
show, "Ring Around the Moon,"
New York actor John Gregory
will portray twin brothers, while
Flynn will be his stand-in during
shadow scenes.
Since it is located in the down-

town area, Vanguard draws its
audiences from the business popu-
lation. Much of its support also
comes from Wayne State Univer-
sity, as tickets are sold through
the WSU Theatre box office, at
student rates.
Plans for Future
Though it is now dependent on
outside financial support, the
Playhouse plans to become self-
sufficient, relying completely on
the box office. By fall it hopes to
become a full equity company, re-
lieving the financial burden on
some of the cast members.
But its major ambition is to
gain the full support of the De-
troit community and to be estab-
lished as the civic theatre.
