THE MICHIGAN DAILY FRIDAY, APRIL 22, 1960 THE MICHIGAN DAILY FRIDAY, APRIL 22, 1960 Offer New Jewelry 'To Adorn Appearance Novelty Hand Bags Appear In Variety of New Shapes By ROBYN McMILLIN "Seven-story Chokers" are a dramatic new kind of costume jewelry. They are just what the name implies, necklaces of many stories, or strands. Most of them, known as "high-risers," start high on the neck as a several-stranded choker and continue down from there; others start at the base of the neck. They are available in almost all colors and types of beads and many combinations. Do-it-your- self fans can make their own by combining several coordinating necklaces. Alternate Beads Imported "Baby-seed Beads," otherwise known as "Caviar Beads" consist of thirty or more strands of tiny beads. Sometimes the strands of tiny beads are altrenated with larger ones. These come mostly in pastel shades. Still on the scene from other years are chunky jewelry and pas- tel enamels trimmed . in gold. White enamel is chic for summer, with its cool, bright look. Wearing Watches Novelty watches are becoming favorites with some girls, who i--°- . --Daily-Jim Lanard WOOL NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD-This fine English virgin wool tennis sweater with dark strippings at the waist and neck is a compliment to any girl's, or fellow's, for that matter, spring and summer wardrobe. Some have velvet or interchangeable colored bands. Some girls are wearing "mod- ern" jewelry, slowly becoming more popular. Modern jewelry is seen most often in pins and is generally of silver or copper wire bent into strange shapes or, molded metal in ultramodern designs. For Campus Date Women Suggest Dressing Casual The casual, comfortable, care- free look is the secret of the well- dressed Michigan coed. For the coffee date anything from ber- muda and shorts to a Madras look is acceptable. Here the emphasis should be placed on a suitable attire for an afternoon date. A Friday night date usually is a movie followed by a snack. The accepted dress is that collegiate look, and here Madras plaid is a favorite. A coed has the liberty of wearing a simple, smart outfit of either a sweater and skirt or a tailored sheath. Again the look is casual, carefree, and comfortable for those three hours in the theater. On Saturday night in Ann Ar- bor, the fashion parade is any- thing from pajamas to a formal. The dress is determined by the program for that particular eve- ning. Everyone has witnessed the coed's talent for designing an original and handsome costume for that P.J., South Seas, Roaring Twenties, and even the Beatnick or Toga parties. For a more formal date, a smart sheath shirtwaist dress is a favorite selection. A variety of styles are accept- able for the really "big" weekend at Michigan-the Pledge Formal, J-Hop, Homecoming, and Michi- gras. The fashion ranges from a sophisticated shirtwaist to a stun- ning chiffon formal. MAST'S Presents the new SPRING FASHIONS Purses are springingto life in the shapes of fish and frogs this season. Purses with different floweredj designs are quite popular. This is a reflection of Latin influence. These novelty - shaped hand bags with scales of multi-colored sequins accent the trend toward large,- straw purses. Also growing from this realistic base are the popular milking cans, fringed feed bags, and rope-hand- led Creole fishing backets. But bulky and stylish are syn- onomous only as long as it's prac- tical-that is until the purse out- grows the bicycle basket. Natural and white are the most popular shades in these large- handled bags, with colored accents sprouting in realistic rose clusters, velvet watermelons, and pastel sea shells. Even clutch piurses, mostly in pastel leathers are growing and adding novelty clasps and chains. These are designed for the coed who still prefers to toss her purse into her book-bag without wond- ering if a trail of grapefruit is following her to class. 4 } f , 1r 1111l #4 By RUTH EVENHUIS I Make-up, like dress, is an ndi- ation of a girl's taste, personality, ,nd often, her mood, And the effective expression of hese depends on her "know-how" ind her fashion sense. For instance, the girl in line with this years pastel clothing ron't mix the subtle softness of :er costume with harsh, dark nake-up. Similarly, the girl who refers darker or more dramatic lothing won't let her clothes out- hout her. She will co-ordinate a pore vivid make-up to her cos- ume. Determine Effect Make-up, then, is an art. The lesired effect must be determined, nd the colors blended skillfully o attain this effect. The illusion of an arch can the application of base three be obtained by darkening brows shades darker than that used on slightly more at the point where the rest of the face to the bridge the arch should be at the bottom of the nose and the tip will break of the brow. A delicate bit of eye artistry is the drawing of a line with a soft eyebrow pencil or eyeliner pencil all around the eye on the ledge of skin where the lashes grow. This device, if carefully employed, makes the eyes take on interesting depth and the illusion of greater size. Watch Line The line should begin about halfway across the lid and con- tinue about an eighth of an inch outward from the corner of the eye. Then, by brushing the finger lightly across the line it is blended into a subtle shadow. A noticeable line, on the other hand, makes the eye look "hard" and calculat- ing. The application of mascara darkens the bleached tips of the lashes, making them appear long- er. If it is skillfully applied it need not make them look stiffer, or gummier, or less natural. Women Shown Original Styles In Belt Apparel A large variety of belts are be- ing shown and will be worn this spring. Belts made of materials such as straw, leather, hemp, madras, silk, linen are being manufactured in contour and straight belts, crush and cinch, and the familiar cum- merbund. Belts of madras are of special interest, since it is a luxury fab- ric, hand woven in India. Only 16 yards are woven at a time and therefore almost every piece is original. These belts come in plaids which can be mixed with skirts and purses as long as one color pre- dominates. by VITALITY ACCENT PANORAMA I /I // / " MANY COLORS * MATCH ING HANDBAGS il Al $10.95 to $17.95 Campus MT 619 E.
