THEMICHIGANDAILY Attractive Rainwear Catches Feminine Appeal Little Change in Women's Hats, Wearing 'Beehive' for Spring By BEATRICE TEODORO Girls at the University are sat str-ing to wear more attractive rain- wear. New patterns in madras and cot- ton are being widely chosen by the popular coed. This does not mean that the plain poplin style is on its way out, but it does mean that more accent is being put into rainwear. Warmer weather is here, and so is rain. Therefore, rainwear is a must in every girl's wardrobe. With spring has come the 1960 standards for the University coeds concerning the "ins" and "outs" of rainwear. On - its way out, the fuller sil- houette of the trenchcoat is meet- ing the double breasted, belted, foreign-intrigue style as it comes in. Already in is the slim look of the Chesterfield, and definitely out is the practical oilskin slicker. These trends reflect the theory that in the gloom of rain, women prefer attractiveness to practi- cality. Many new fabrics are becoming popular. Raincoats can be found in Madras, corduroy, boutique, cot- ton knit, seersucker and the peren- nial poplin. All fabrics are treated for water "resistance" or "repel- lency." Accessories that continue to carry out the fabric and color trends are fashionable. Matching hats, scarves and slim umbrellas are available in all patterns and materials. Scarves are in only if they are tied at the back of the neck. Repellent velvet berets are popular if they match the velvet collar of a Chesterfield coat. And umbrellas are in if they are of the slender, parasol variety. Color Is the keynote for all spring rainwear. Bright plaids, prints, checks and stripes are re- placing khaki and olive green as in colors. Seersucker materials are coming in tapestry patterns. And white is returning as the biggest in color of the year. The trend to brighter colors and more attractive, versatile fabrics in rainwear is definitely in. And with the wide varieties of styles and materials available, perhaps even the Ann Arbor rain will be- come in. To be well-dressed, every woman needs at least one hat in her wardrobe. Wearing her new chap- eau and heels the woman feels fresh and smart and knows she looks as well as she feels. The clip-on usually consists of a band which fits across the head with a small veil attached. Styles vary from the very plain to others which have feathers, brocade or flowers on them. "Whimsey" hats are oval and may have netting, bows or flowers on the crown. They are worn by many today, and make a simple accessory for traveling. This spring the new look is known as the Beehive. It is shaped just exactly as the word implies and is covered with loads of flow- ers. Many women seem to have the same reaction toward it. First they laugh at it, then they buy them and enjoy them. Whatever the style or shade may be this season, women are turning as usual to hat shops to find one of their most needed ac- cessories. -Daily-Willfried 'ildebrandt BEEHIVE LOOK-This spring women will be seeing layers upon layers of flowers adorning the latest in hats-the beehive.
