THE MICHIGAN DAILY Women View New Trend in Bathing Suit Fas hions By MAME JACKSON Whether a girl spends her sum- mer at a plush resort on the coast or merely takes occasional trips to a nearby inland lake, variety and originality are the key words! for her round-the-water-wear. A wide selection of swimsuits, in various colors and styles, are feat- ured in the new beach wear styles for this year. By careful selection, a girl can relay any mood she wishes to create through her choice of swim wear. New bathing suit styles range from the controversial bikini to the more conventional one-piece suit. However, this year there- is a definite trend back to the two- piece variety. Knits Plentiful Knit suits, both in solid colors and vivid prints, are plentiful this year. There are also many styles and colors in cottons, ginghams and synthetic fibers. The new rounded neck - line is featured among these new styles. For the most part, the new bathing suits emphasize bright colors and gay prints. Polka dots, flowered designs, Hawaiian and Oriental prints are prevailant. Poodle Cloth A novelty bathing suit number is the new, exotic "poodle cloth" suit which comes in either black or white. Poodle cloth, a heavy cotton knit, gives a sophisticated, clinging effect and will be popular for summer wear. Many of the new-style swim- suits are complemented by match- ing beach jackets of varying styles. These matching suit and Jacket sets will be especially pop- ular' for beach wear in the less torrid'weather. Beach Jackets Available Beach jackets are available in a number of styles and lengths which range from knee length to waist level and from fitted to strictly box type styles. Cotton and terry cloth jackets in boat neck pullover and traditional car- digan styles are particularly pop- ular. Modifications have been added to the traditional belted terry cloth Jacket. Fringed hems, man- darine collars, handkerchief pock- ets and brightly colored trim are among some of the innovations which have been added. Bold block prints in terry cloth and cotton are also important in the beach jacket line. Beach Hats Popular Hats for beach wear this year are dominated by a distinct Italian influence. Large, gayly - colored straw hats with attached scarves, streamers or novelty objects have shown great popularity. This year's wide selection of strange- looking chapeaux gives every wo- man the opportunity to express her individuality and idiosyncra- cies. Broad - brimmed, man - styled hats with madras bands are be- coming increasingly popular, and last year's inverted sailor cap with witty phrases is back again. Wear Scarves In addition to the wide variety of beach hats, various other types of head gear will be worn on the beach this year. Printed cotton and chiffon scarves are always appropriate. A few novelties have also been added to these stand- ards. One of the most unique in- troductions is the plain colored chiffon scarf with an attached swab of artificial hair-a boon to bedraggled pixies. Also, beach bags are fabulous this year. The new bags are rubberized inside and are large enough to carry all beach necessi- ties-books, food, sun tan lotion, P suits and other camping supplies: The new bags come in a variety of curious shapes and colors. Some resemble bongo drums, while others conform to the convention- al suitcase model. Complete beach wardrobe sets are available which include matching bathing suits, hats, towels and beach bags. Bold flower and novelty prints have been added to the standard stripped beach towel this year. The girl who takes a dip without a cap will be quite unique. This year's caps come in an array of unusual colors-flame red, bright blue and unmistakable, oranges and yellows. Fancy Caps Popular The real fancy type bathing caps are the most popular. These include flame-shapped or shaggey- cut caps and others that boast hundreds of tiny rubber flowers. A final must for the beach girl is a pair of exotic sun glasses from the new, fanatic styles. Last year's trend toward black-framed, plain glasses has been replaced by a definite movement toward the wierd and the fantastic in occular wear. Flowered Glasses The popular f lo w e r e d and flame -shaped glasses for this summer feature a conglamoration of flashy color schemes - reds, purples, pinks, roses, tourquoises and pearlized grays. Such sun glasses are addmitedly conversa- tion pieces but add a zany bit of appeal to any beach outfit. All articles of beach apparel for this year are dominated by a touch of the new, the different, the exciting. This gives every wo- man the opportunity to comple- ment her individual personality by a careful selection of beach togs.
