22, 1960 'THE MICHIGAN DAIIV 22, 1960 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Repp Ties Make Comeback; Paisleys, Foulards Leaving (. Rainwear Necessary for Ann Arbor Weather By GEORGE LEVIN Very little new will be shown this spring in ties or belts. Repps will make a comeback with brighter colors and wider stripes. Paisleys and foulards, though pushed somewhat into the background, will still be popular. They will have lighter back- ground. Hemp 4nd cloth belts will domi- nate. Madras will be a popular pattern in both ties and belts. As usual in spring, silks will be the most popular fabrics. Silk shantung in repps should be the most popular. With dark subtle colors, shantung gives an irrides- cent effect. This goes well with any suit or sport jacket. Dark ol- ive green should be the most popu-1 lar color in this tie. Shantung will also be used in the bolder reppe. Gold will be the dominant color here. These stripes will be wider. Will Use Shantung Paisley and foulards will also be used on shantung. They too, will be lighter. Gold, Olive and J tan will be used for the back- ground. Paisleys will be also avail- able on imported, hand-blocked, English silk. Horizontal stripes on India Silk will be popular for chord suits. They will be in bright colors. Cotton will be another fabric used in spring ties. Madras in any color will come in cotton. Also Swiss Poplin in repps will be a popular tie. They will come in bold repps with gold again the domin- ant color. Wearing Ascots In the tie line also are chokers or ascots. They were originally adopted from England as skiing scarfs and have carried through to spring. They can be worn ei- ther under sport or dress shirts. They come in Foulards and solid shantung. Hemp will dominate the belt scene. They come in tan, olive, green, brown, black and white. Some are braided and elasticized. The cloth belt will again be popu- lar. They are cotton cloth on lea- ther or webbing. The cloth come in Madras, stripes and paisleys. Some belts come with novelty buckles. For beach parties, a bot- tle opener buckle is available. j BUTTON-DOWN Half Sleeve Dress Shirts Although the poplin raglin sleeve style raincoat has been seen on the University campus for sev- eral seasons now, it is just be- coming popular elsewhere. The excessive amount of rain during the spring and fall prob- ably accounts for its popularity and the necessity of having one. Short Popularity In spite of the short-lived pop- ularity of double-breasted English styles, by far the great majority of men at the University still choose the approvimately knee-' length, single breasted raincoat. Poplin is still the most popular style, with the natural tan shade being the popular color, as it has been in the past. Trench Coat Out The belted trench coat has left the scene this year, but the re- maining styles still bear resemb- lance to this basic type-with no belt. Most are modeled on some continental patern. In contrast to the naturals and plain colors of most raincoats, there is a reversable lining of muted glen plaid on the other side. However, it appears that on this campus, no one has ever dared to switch his rain coat in-side-out. RainJackets, New Style A new style is becoming an av- alanche of popularity on the cam- pus. It's the rainjacket. It comes in two styles. The belt length variety that has a buttonable col- lar to keep the wind and rain out. This is the most popular one. The other style, which is the most recent one to appear, is slightly longer. This rainjacket comes down over the hips and has a sleeker appearance. Tan, Olive Fashionable Shades of tan and olive are most fashionable this season. Olive has its advantages because it doesn't show the dirt as quickly as the more popular tan. How- ever, tan is the most widely worn because many students like to have a "casual" not-too-dressed appearance. For added protection as well as distinction, the traditional black umbrella is a "must" this spring. In nylon, rayon, or a mixture of the two, the umbrella is the final touch for a complete rainwear outfit. The versatility of the raincoat makes it a necessity in Ann Arbor. The raincoat adequately serves as an overcoat when spending an evening with the Boston Pops at Hill Auditorium or when watch- ing the Michigras parade pass by. Rules Dictate Proper Attire For Formals Does an invitation marked semi- formal or formal leave you stand- lng in indecision before your closet? A few rules regarding the differ- ence between "black ;tie" and "white tie" affairs will give you the assurance that is a natural ac- companiment of good grooming. Semi-formal wear usually de- notes informal functions after 6 p.m. This includes weddings, din- ners, dances or parties that specify "black tie." Jackets Favor Blue Choose the single-breasted, shawl collar jacket. Midnight blue is favorite with most well turned. out men today. Tuxedo trousers should match the jacket, with the stripe down the side matching the jacket facing. Instead of a waistcoat, a cum- merbund is often worn to add smartness to a single-breasted tux- edo. Wear a color to match the tie, although fancy cummerbunds are also proper. The semi-formal shirt has a soft pleated bosom, with an at- tached collar for greater comfort. With it wear a black or midnight blue bow necktie in the longer, narrower shape. Hats of Homburg Accessories call for black ribbed or plain hose,-black-patent or calf oxford shoes and white or gray mocha gloves. The hat is black, dark gray or midnight blue, in homburg or snap brim style. To complete this semi-formal attire in fine style, choose an outer coat of plain blue, black or dark gray. White-Tie Events Banquets, the opera, cotillions and other events specifying white tie call for strictly formal wear. The jacket choice is a tail coat of midnight blue or black, while the waistcoat is of white pique and can be either single or double- breasted. Trousers match the jacket, with braid to match jacket lapels. Showing beneath are black-ribbed or plain hose and shoes of black patent leather or pump style. Pique for Tie, Shirt Wear a white pique bow tie on a pique-bosomed shirt. Wing col- lar and French cuffs are "musts" on the formal shirt. Accessories include white muf- fier, boutonniere and white hand- kerchief. Pearl studs and cuff links are the jewelry worn, while the key chain is optional.
