APRIL 9, 1960 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAG i L. i;},", ' Hosts Science Fair EARLY VISITOR-A young science enthusiast gets an opportunity to view the exhibits of the South. eastern Michigan Science Fair which is being held in Yost Fieldhouse. Last year sonme 7,500 students viewed exhibits prepared by 156 junior and senior high school students. A larger turnout is expected this year. Students from four counties prepared the displays. High school students frome four counties prepared the products of( many months of planning and' pains-taking work for competition as the Southeastern Michigan Science Fair opened in Yost Field- house last night. Scientific exhibits, on chicken embryoes and smoking mice, and such engineering marvels as an electric soup-stirrer and an elec- tronic computer fascinated early spectators. Students from both junior and senicr high schools in Washtenaw and surrounding counties sub- mitted a total of 173 exhibits and projects for judging which began yesterday and will end this morn- Iug. The fair, sponsored by the Ann Arbor Exchange Club, the Ann Arbor News and the University Bureau of School Services, at- tracted entries from 87 senior high' students and 98 junior division contestants. Displays were submitted from 24 schools, with the majority be- ing from Washtenaw County. Last year there were 139 entries, but this was because the fair was ac- tually limited to this county. The National Science Service this year gave the sponsors an area of five counties from which to receive projects. The top boy and girl winner in the senior divi- sion will be sent to the National Science Fair in Indianapolis, May 11-14. The senior division is divided into six categories: biology, chem- istry, earth sciences, engineering, mathematics and physics. Junior division entrants compete in only a general science category. John Rosemergy, chairman of the Ann Arbor High School sci- ence department, is serving as chairman of the 27 judges who come from the University, East- ern Michigan University, high schools outside the competingI areas, local industry and teach- ers attending the Academic Year Institute here. Besides the two top awards, cash prizes and medals will be pre- sented to the winning contestants. RADIO TALKS ON " LOVE"F Students will have an opportunity to hear a series of 10 radio talks on the subject of "Love" by Dr. C. S. Lewis, world-renowned British philo- sopher, writer, and teacher at Cambridge University. The talks, which are produced by the Episcopal Radio-TV Foundation, Atlanta, Georgia, will be broadcast over station WUOM-FM (91-7). The SECOND of the series will be Sunday, April 10 at 12:30 p.m. The remainder of the series will be presented at the same time on succeeding Sundays through June 5. Dr. Lewis has been described by TIME magazine as: "one of the most influential spokesmen for Christianity in the English-speaking world." Among his books is "The Screwtape Letters," which has sold nearly 250,000 copies. In his talks, he describes the four varieties of love-love between near relatives, between friends, the love of man and woman, and the love of God. The series is designed to give opportunity for self-study of problems, and crises of youth, parenthood, family life, and every relationship in which some facet of love plays a part.
