BASEBALL SIDELIGHT: IBerra Opens at Third ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (A') - Yogi Berra played third base for the Yankees in their first exhibi- tion game against the St. Louis Cardinals today. - He looked pretty good statisti- cally with two putouts, two assists and one error. But otherwise what happened to Yogi shouldn't happen - well, to a third baseman. Here's how it went as the Cards won the game 5-1: First inning - Joe Cunningham of the Cards tried a bunt on the first pitch. Catcher Elston Howard saved Berra embarrassment by grabbing the ball and throwing Cunningham out. Second inning - Berra took Hal Smith's grounder down the third base line, caught Boe Nieman try- ing to slide back to third but pulled Moose Skowron off the bag with a wide throw to first. Third inning - another wide throw pulled Skowron off first and Gene Oliver was safe. He later! scored. But Berra ended the inning by knocking down Ken Boyer's hard bounder and throwing him out. Fourth inning - Yogi got the heel of his glove on Smith's bound- er over toward short, pursued the ball like a man chasing a chicken and made a force play at second. Fifth inning -Berra circled frantically under a high pop by Wilmer Mizell and didn't get near it. Mizell reached first, but when he tried to take third on Daryl Spencer's single, Yogi took Ken Hunt's throw from the outfield and tagged him out.
