THE MICHIGAN DAILY Polish Find Teacher Trend Away from Rural Areas POLAND -- Providing rural areas with qualified academic peo- ple is very difficult in Poland. Graduates of the institutions of higher learning always And rea- sons for taking a position in the city; no one wants to go to the country, although the government decreed an ordinance last summer on the job assignments for gradu- ates which aims at sending quali- fled people to the provinces, where they are urgently needed. The graduates' repugnance to- ward the provinces is so pro- nounced that many do not even produce their diplomas, when all US-23 Paving To -Start Soon A five-man State Highway De- partment survey crew started work yesterday on the widening and resurfacing of Washtenaw Ave. (US-23) between Tuomy Rd. and E. Stadium Blvd. After the addition of a fourth lane the highway will be surfaced with bituminous concrete. The project is part of the High- way Department's $13.6 million resurfacing program for 1960, which calls for resurfacing of 458 miles of trunklines in 52 counties and widening of 192 miles of highway in 25 counties. exacuses prove to be in vain, pre- ferring to take a job as laborer in the city. The only solution seems to be to make residence in the provinces more attractive to the graduates by means of material concessions, such as preference in the assign- ment of living quarters - as far as possible in separate dwellings - )nd a favourable start at the place of employment.
