THE MICHIGAN DAILY Library Installs Machine For Public Microfilming * DAILY OFFICIAL BULLETIN CASEIfSk By MAME JACKSON "It's unique--another 'Michigan William R. Morgan, divisional librarian, was talking about the General Library's new microfilm- Ing machine that went into opera- tion Friday. The new machine is the only one in the United States available for public use. "University students and fac- ulty will be able to copy long arti- cles and bibliographies easily and quickly on the new self-operating machine," Morgan said. Developed Daily The machine is very easily oper- ated and available whenever the library is open. Film will be de- veloped each day, and enlarged copies of the microfilmed material will be ready for students to pick up in the Reserve Reading Room three or four days after they have microfilmed it. "A minimum developing cost will be charged for this service," Morgan added. Forty cents will be charged for the first five frames, and an additional eight cents will be charged for each extra frame. Each frame consists of one photo- graph. The new microfilming machine is a feature of the well-established Reserve Reading Room in the General Library. Sixteen machines for reading microfilms and micro- prints are located there. Study Rare Books The use of microfilming makes it possible for students to study rare' or old books which the li- brary- could not afford in book form. Foreign periodicals and American newspapers are also stored in microfilm. Morgan is confident that the new microfilming machine will be of great value to students. "It should help so ,many people in copying materials easily and inex- pensively."
