k. FOUR THE MICHIGAN DAILY FRIDAY, FEBRUA HIGAN SWIM CAPTAIN: ashnick Out of Action Indefinitely MAY DECIDE NCAA, BIG TEN MEETS: Divers Hold Key to cM' Swun Success By HAL APPLEBAUM Cichigan Swim Captain Tony hnick will be out of action in- nitely with infectious mono- leosis. ashnick, American, NCAA, and Ten record holder in both the -yard butterfly and 200-yard vidual relay, is currently in ,th Service where he will re- n until some time next week. is not yet known when he be able to return to action. ch Gus Stager said, "He will bably be out of all of the re- maining dual meets. However, we are hoping he will be able to swim in the Big Ten Championship and in the NCAA meet in March." "Whether or not Tashnick can swim in these meets depends on his ability to recover from the ill- ness," Stager mentioned. "Mononucleosis weakens an in- dividual tremendously and we don't know if Tashnick will be able to regain the strength he needs to swim well," the Michigan coach added. Tashnick was a swim sensation in 1957-58 season when as an un- heralded sophomore he won three Big Ten, two NCAA and an AAU title. Last year he repeated his Big Ten triumphs, but lost his NCAA titles to teammate Dave Gilland- ers and surrendered his AAU title to another Wolverine, Frank Le- gacki. This past summer Tashnick represented the United States in the Pan-American Games. The loss of Tashnick leaves Gil- landers the sole Wolverine stand- out in the 200-yard butterfly. 7 QUALITY FOOTWEAR Thirty years of shoe experience here in Ann Arbor with Michigan students convinces us "that there is no substitute for quality." Coach Gus Stager, using few of his star swimmers in their spe- cialties, saw his Wolverines de- feat Iowa State, 70-25 and Min-; nesota, 69-36, January 15 and 16, the weekend preceding exams, and then return after a two-week lay- off to trounce Purdue 70-34, Feb. 1. In winning these three meets the Wolverines had 19 different swimmers finish first as they won 27 of the 33 events held. The Wolverines' dual meet win streak of 31 has surpassed the previous Michigan record of 29 set in the years 1928-1931, which was broken when the New York Athletic Club defeated the Wol- verines 46-28 in February 1931. In the period 1938-1942 Mich- igan went 32 straight dual meets without a defeat, but their record was marred by two ties with Ohio State in the 1941-1942 season. This streak was ended in January 1942 when Yale swamped the Wolverines, 59-16. The only winner for Michigan in all three meets over the semes- ter break was junior breaststrok- er Ron Clark, who set an Ameri- can, NCAA, Michigan and Pool Record in the 200-yard breast- stroke against Purdue. Clark won easily at Minnesota and Iowa State, but swam the dis- tance in only fair times. Against Purdue, however, he planned and won his race against the clock, shattering every short course record as he went. His time of 2:19.2 bettered the NCAA mark of 2:21.3 set by Bill Mulliken of Miami (0.) last year and the American record of 2:23.4 held by Charles Griffith of the Hill School set in 1958. The meets at Iowa State and Minnesota marked the final com- petition for freestyler Dick Han- cy, wHo completed his eligibility. The next meet is Feb. 13 against MSU and Stager hopes to have his swimmers near top condition as they begin the hard battle to retain the conference and nation- al titles. MEET SCORES MICHIGAN 70. Iowa state 25 MICHIGAN 69, Minnesota 36 MICHIGAN 70, Purdue 34 Michigan winners and Times: 50-yard freestyle - Dave Heizer (M) 24.3. By HAL APPLEBAUM Michigan divers are on the spot. With the Big Ten and NCAA swimming championships rapidly a p p r o a c h i n g, Michigan swim coach Gus Stager and acting div- T ing coach Dick Kimball are grow- ing firmer in their conviction that if the Wolverines are to retain their possession of these coveted swim titles the divers will be re- sponsible for providing the win- ning margin. Michigan's only serious chal- lenger for Big Ten honors, Indi- ana, is without divers of cham- pionship quality. Thus, whatever points the Wolverines earn in div- ing will have to be made up by the Hoosiers in the swimming events if they are to unseat Mich- igan in Big Ten, National or dual meet competition. Southern California, considered the only other challenger for na- tional honors, has one diver, Gary Tobian, of recognized champion- ship ability. Only Other Divers In fact, the only other divers who can threaten the Michigan squad and Tobian is the Ohio State duo of Sam Hall and Lou Vitucci. However, the Buckeyes will be unable to match the Wol- verines, Hoosiers or Trojans in the swimming events. "It may well be that the Indi- ana dual meet, the Big Ten and the NCAA championships will all be decided by the diving," stated Stager. "Indiana will have to forfeit seven points to us in the dual meet and probably more in the other meets. If we can win some firsts or seconds in the big meets COEDS: ItGs Hairstyling Galore! No Appointment Needed Custom-Styling THE DASCOLA BARBERS near Michigan Theatre we may beat them in the other meets," he added. Webster Eligible The key to the Michigan div- ing success may be held by junior Bob Webster, a transfer student, who gained his eligibility at the end of the past semester. A medal winner in the Pan- American games, Webster, a na- tive of Santa Ana, Calif. will team with Joe Gerlach, Ernie Meissner, Ron Jaco and 'T' Francis on what may be the strongest collegiate diving team in the nation. Webster and Gerlach, the cur- rent AAU indoor champion, give the Wolverines the finest one-two punch in the nation, while the presence of Meissner, Jaco and Francis gives the squad needed and outstanding depth. All Can Place "All five men are capable of placing in Big Ten and NCAA competition, however, we are only allowed to enter four men in each meet," Kimball stated. "I hope that we will be able to qualify all four in both meets and 4 if we do we are capable of scor- ing a total of 15 points in each diving event," he added. "That's a lot to hope for, but on any given day our divers are cap- able of doing that well," Kimball mentioned confidently, "and our success may hinge on such a per- formance." "Webster, Gerlach, Hall and Tobian should have a wide open battle in the National Chanipion- ships and it's virtually impossible to say who will win," Kimball, a former Michigan diving star turned coach, stated. Not As Sharp "Meissner, Jaco, Francis, Vit- ucci and whoever else appears on the scene aren't quite as sharp as the other four. However, there's no reason why we can't place four divers in the final standings in the National Championship," he added. "We should do better in the Big Ten's because besides the two Ohio State divers there will be virutally no competition," Kim- ball stated. Visiting th e camnpus? Then dine at...
