THE MICHIGAN DAILY TUESDAY, MARCH 1, 1960 THE MICHIGAN DAILY TUESflAY, MARCH 1,19601 iii Librarian Cites Rise in Undergrad Circulation By MAME JACKSON "The Undergraduate Library is, taking hold more and more with University students," Mrs. Roberta C. Keniston, head librarian, said recently. Book circulation during the Library's second operational year' has been on a steady increase. Library statistics indicate that 162,000 books were drawn out for home use during the past year- more than a sixty per cent increase over last year's home circulation. An additional 454,000 volumes were used by students in the Li- brary itself. This figure shows a ten per cent increase over the pre- ceding year. Mrs. Keniston noted that these figures probably do not account for all the books used, because many students reshelve their books when they are finished. "The entire atmosphere of the Library encourages and stimulates study. The open ventilation, the comfortable furniture and the lighting are all important factors. "Open {shelves of well-selected books arouse the students' interest and encourage them to go beyond the minimum reading require- ments for a course. "Also, professors are using the Library more in connection with teaching by assigning reading lists and research papers." "The increased circulation, how- I I IY i ever, does not apply only to course-required books," Mrs. Ken- iston added. Over 41 per cent of the books are read for pleasure or personal research purposes. This voluntary reading also shows a slight in- crease over last year. "Each incoming freshman class seems to be more serious about their studies. In the past the Library didn't go into full swing until the second or third week of the semester. This . -"r the Li- brary had to start operating full force the first night," she said. *1 ;J A MAKING TIME-Though studying is the big UGLI activitiy, timewise, there are also moments for other duties.
