SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 24,1963 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE FM SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 1963 THE MTCHTGA1V DAILY PA(W Wrvw~ AL Cava. a " r. It SGC COMMUNICATIONS: Filip Views Goals, Functions of PRB For Direct Classified Ad Service, Phone NO 2-4786 from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. Monday through Friday, and 9:30 'til 11:30 A.M. Saturday c - i By ALLISON SMALLEY "We've had approximately 10 Student Government C o u n c i l members speaking in housing Units all over campus in the last two weeks," Donald Filip, '65,' chairman of the SGC Public Re- lations Board, said yesterday. The speakers are being spon- sored by the Board, which was formed last year. Through this new committee, SGC hopes to "inform objectively about, and create interest in, the issues and actions of the student govern- ment." F'ilip said that the board has come quite a way toward achiev- ing its goals. He said that stu- dents become much more interest- ed in SGC when they are informed on what Council does. He cited such examples as explaining the functions and values of the Stu- dent Book Exchange and Cinema Guild. All The News -. . We started most of our public f'elations program last spring when the newsletter of the SGC was distributed. The newsletter ap- pears twice a semester, and about 3,000 copies are issued around campus," Filip added. The speakers bureau was start- ed to give students the opportun- ity for discussion of issues on a person-to-person basis with SGC members. "A great amount of in- terest has been aroused by speak- ing on women's hours in sorority houses, so our next newsletter will expand on this subject," Filip noted. Campus Communications A third field the Public Rela- tions Board covers is communica- tion with other campuses. The booklet of the University's student government structure is printed jointly by the Inter-Fraternity Council and SGC. The booklet goes to other colleges for evaluation and comparison. "In distributing the booklet, we begin with the Big Ten schools because of the similarities between these other schools and the Uni- versity. However, we plan to ex- pand further next semester," Filip commented. ."Our problem with the booklet is that the structure of SGC is continually changing, as in the addition of ex-officio members of the board," Filip said. Delayed Action Although the PRB proposed bringing a prominent figure to the University to speak on govern- ment or education, the project has been delayed. "It is difficult for SGC to spon- sor a controversial speaker like Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett. If we can find a neutral spokes- man who will not leave a poor re- flection on the Council, we will sponsor him," Filip commented. PERSONAL Too bad you missed THE MIKADO. It was great! I V SHOULD AULD ACQUAINTANCE AND JAZZ LIKE THAT I am now an elderly gentleman, full of years and aches, but my thoughts keep ever turning to my undergraduate days. This is called "arrested development." But I cannot stop the healing tide of nostalgia that washes over me as I recall those golden campus days, those ivy-covered buildings (actually, at my college, there was only ivy: no bricks), those pulse-tingling lectures on John Dryden and Cotton Mather, the many friends I made, the many deans I bit. I know some of you are already dreading the day when you graduate and lose touch with all your merry classmates. It is my pleasant task today to assure you that it need not be so; all you have to do is join the Alumni Association and every year you will receive a bright, newsy, chatty bulletin, chock-full of tidings about your old buddies. Oh, what a red-letter day it is at my house, the day the Alumni Bulletin arrives! 1I cancel all my engagements, take the phone off the hook, dismiss my resident osteopath, put the cheetah outside, and settle down for an evening of pure pleasure with the Bulletin and (need I add?) a good supply of Marlboro Cigarettes. That filter, that flavor, that yielding soft pack, that firm Flip Top box, never fails to heighten my pleasure whether I am playing Double Canfield or watching the radio or knitting an afghan or enjoying any other diverting pursuit you might name-except, of course, spear fishing. But then, how much spear fishing does one do in Clovis, New Mexico, where I live? But I digress. Let us return to my Alumni Bulletin and the fascinating news about my old friends and classmates. I quote from the current issue: "Well, fellow alums, it certainly has been a wing-dinger of a year for us old grads! Remember Mildred Cheddar and Harry Camembert, those crazy kids who always held hands in Econ II? Well, they're married now and living in Clovis, New Mexico, where Harry rents spear-fishing equipment, and Mildred has just given birth to a lovely 28-pound daughter, her second in four months. Nice going, Mildred and Harry! "Remember Jethro Brie, the man we voted most likely to succeed? Well, old Jethro is still gathering laurels! Last week he was voted 'Motorman of the Year' by his fellow workers in the Duluth streetcar system. 'I owe it all to my brakeman,' said Jethro in a characteristically modest acceptance speech. Same old Jethro! "Probably the most glamorous time had by any of us old alums was had by Francis Macomber last year. He went on a big game hunting safari all the way to Africa! We received many interesting post cards from Francis until he was, alas, acci- dentally shot and killed by his wife and white hunter. Tough luck, Francis!
