SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 3,1963 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE FIVE BIG TEN ACTION: .DAILY OFFICIAL BU LLETI N MSUE EAST LANSING (P) - Little Sherm Lewis, the mighty mite of the Spartan backfield, led Michi- gan State to a 30-13 upset over Wisconsin yesterday. Michigan State now has three victories and a tie in the con- ference and remains among the front-runner favorites for the Big Ten title and a Rose Bowl bid. Wisconsin, ranked ninth in the nation, previously had been beat- en only by Ohio State. Lewis, a 152-pounder, sprinted for a snore on an 87-yard pass play the first time the Spartans got the ball. He caught the pass from Steve Juday on the dead run on his own 45 and raced in untouched. Sharing Spartan honors with Lewis was reserve quarterback OSU, Ilmi niRemain on Top n+ 4 "')A - - 4- +hn T. n n.yl+.: T.r.w rywn rrn i Irv.....+:,.,-A -0--- U--- IM ' .__ Dick Proebstle, who went in as signal caller when Juday suf- fered a shoulder separation in the first period. Dr. James Feurig, team physician, said Juday will be sidelined for about three weeks. The solid Spartan defense throt- tled the Badger rushing game. Lefthanded passer Harold Brandt,l who had led Wisconsin to its of- fensive honors, was hitting well in the first period but MSU then started putting the rush on him. Coach Milt Bruhn put in Dave Fronek at quarterback in the sec- ond half and Fronek directed his team on an 80-yard scoring march. Fronek missed his first extra point try after previously booting 13 in a row. Iowa Falls A uaUUK; 'I E; auua acu COLUMBUS OP) - Sophomorej Tom Barrington, shifted from sub- stitute quarterback for his first try at left halfback, sparked Ohio State to a 7-3 victory over Iowa yesterday that kept the Buckeye Big Ten title and Rose Bowl hopes alive. The Bucks, who had scored only one touchdown in their last two games, had only one first down in the first eight tries with the ball and were behind 3-0 when Bar- rington was sent in late in the first period. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (P)--Sopho- more fullback Jim Grabowski, running like a souped-up bull- dozer, slammed to three touch- downs yesterday as second rank- ed Illinois rolled over Purdue 41- 21. Grabowski ended the first drive by bolting over from the six. Mike Taliaferro's 17-yard pass to Bill Paski and 15-yarder to Jim War- ren set it up. Al Wheatland scored on the second drive from the one after paving the way with a 19-yard run, and Grabowski pumped 18 yards to cap the third drive, help- ing the Illini to a 21-0 lead. Opening Minutes Nowatzke ripped his way for 138 yards in 24 carries, including jaunts of 32, 29, 13 and 15 yards.' Minnesota fumbles set the stage' for two Indiana touchdowns. In the second period, Dilly recovered a bobble at the 50 and the Hoos- iers drove to score in five plays. In the third quarter, Indiana broke it open on Dilly's 29-yard scamper on the first play after guard Melvin Branch had re- covered a fumble. The Gophers' only scoring punch came in the third quarter when they marched 62 yards in 12 plays. Bob Sadek, who had raced 21 yards in the drive for the big gainer, ran three over left tackle for the score. That made it 14-6 as the Gophers missed a two- point try.
