THE MICHIGAN' DAILY FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1963 THE MICHIGAN DAILY FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1,1963 Lean, Hungry Spartans Face Badgers Season Statistics Explain Michigan's Ninth Place Spot L the team with nine returns for 139 yards. Lewis leads in kickoff returns with five for 112 yards. Lewis leads State's scorers with five touchdowns and 30 points. Lewis is tied with Lou Bobich and Dick Gordon in pass intercep- tions with three. Sets Records Lewis set an MSU record on an 88-yard pass play on which he and quarterback Steve Juday collabor- ated in the Southern Cal game. Against Northwestern Lewis scor- ed both of State's touchdowns, and his 86-yard dash erased a for- mer Spartan record for longest run from scrimmage by a State player in Big Ten play. And Sherm is only 5'8" and 152 pounds (that's before the games-- sometimes he gets down to 146). If by any chance Michigan State should gain more momentum and cop a Big Ten title this fall, it would be a crowning glory to jus- tice. In the past few years Daugh- erty has fielded some tremendous teams, full of depth, talent, and weight, and each year State fans expect a close State bid for the ti- tle--only to watch Purdue and a few other local squads upset the mighty Spartans and cool off any Rose Bowl hopes. After last year's 5-4 perform- ance by what many considered to be potentially State's best team in ten years, the people around East Lansing began looking for Daugh- erty's scalp. There were rumors that Duffy would leave at the end of this year, with perhaps a Notre Dame job in the offing. So what happens? Last week, as Daugherty's unheralded, dminu- tive, and unexpected Spartans be- gan to show that there may be some hope for a what was suppos- ed to be a lean year, Michigan State awarded Daugherty a five- year coaching contract. Tomorrow's a big day in East Lansing, and the people around those parts, well, they're waiting to see if State can continue to play better than they look. By JIM GREINER Like them or not, the latest{ Michigan football statistics clear- ly reveal why the team is current- ly mired in ninth place in Big Ten standings. In conference games, the Wol- verines rank ninth in total of- fense, with only Minnesota below them, and fourth in total defense. Bright spots for Michigan in- clude fullback Mel Anthony, eighth in rushing; quarterback Bob Tim- berlake, ninth in passing, seventh in total offense, and sixth in scor- ing; and halfback Jack Clancy, fifth in both kickoff and punt re- turns. By picking up 82 yards against Minnesota, Anthony increased his ground total to 153 yards, for a 4.0 average. Tom Nowatzke, In- diana fullback, leads the Big Ten with 224 yards, an average of 4.1 per carry. Timberlake completed eight of 14 passes against the Gophers,. thereby jumping past Bob Chan- dler and Frosty Evashevski in the quarterback derby. For the season, Timberlake has connected 18 times, Chandler 16 times, and Eva- shevski 12 times. Totals show that Coach Bump Elliott has employed no less than 15 runners as he attempts to im- prove the Michigan ground at- tack. Of those 15, Joe O'Donnell's 50-yard fake punt touchdown run keeps him tops in average, al- though Rindfuss leads regulars with a 4.4 mark, Comparing Michigan statistics to Northwestern's shows that the Wolverine defense should have a tough battle against the Wildcat offense. Northwestern's offense tops Michigan's in every category but punt returns. If the Wolver- ines have trouble with quarter- back Tom Myers' passing, it will probably be because although Michigan's rushing defense is su- perior, its passing defense lags, and Myers tops the Big Ten in total yardage even though he sports a net minus 73 yards run- ning. .( Daily Plans Union Humiliation 0 oS Federal Court Disallows Post Appeal +To MoveSui ~BIRMINGHAM (IP)--A federal fI+t.r a 1v +4-c em ywa If the Union Undesirables show up this afternoon it will be an unprecedented fourth straight time they have come to the Bier Bowl. The Michigan Daily again fields a powerhouse in their attempt to win back the coveted Little Brown Wastebasket, symbol of Daily supremacy in a long (three years) and glorious (1-2, actually 1-1-1) series. The fear and terror which this year's Magnificent Seven strikes into the hearts of its rivals is best exhibited by a convincing 12-6 triumph over the self-proclaimed Maynard Street Champions, the Michigan-Densian. That the first-string Cheetahs will be fired up for the 4 p.m. game goes without saying. Coach Dave "Thin Man" Good himself didn't say, "Last year's win was in the basket, but then you can hardly expect our guys to beat nine-seven Union players plus two Union refs." Coach Good was asked to specify just what the Union could expect from The Daily. "Well, to be completely honest yet precise, dust. We'll run through them and then throw over them. We have a squad of veterans plus -just enough newcomers to really keep us moving. Why, we're three deep at every position. You should have seen them yesterday, all 27 going after that fumble. A gallop poll was taken ("The Trotter" Rowland hits people on the head and then runs). The results were unanimous, but we forgot who was favored. Phil Sutin, named trainer becuse of his concerns, picked The Daily, but he refused to be quoted. Of course we complied. The Cheetah backfield will be Tom Rowland, Bob "The Zephyr" Zwinck, and Stan "Ollie Fran" Kukla. Fearless Ron Wilton will be flanker back. Gerry "Goodheart" Storch and Bill "Bullheaded" Bull- ard are at end. The Union will fall, after all. .I 'ZEPHYR' ZWINCK through hell... DAVE'S SKI SHOP 3162 PACKARD, ANN ARBOR THE CHARGER-An unidentified Daily interior lineman demon- strates the proper stance when on defense. Although this is one of the fundamentals on which The Daily is drilled, he can expect very limited action in the Bier Bowl this afternoon as the Union will have the ball for very few offensive plays.
