THE MICHIGAN DAILY TUESDAY,( .W.r echini Hobbled for Rest of Season -.Mb- - - -ml.- - - - By GARY WINER 3ophomore center Tom Ceechini ut for the year. chat was the latest word from iversity Hospital yesterday, ere the United Press Interna- :al Lineman of the Week was rated on for torn ligaments in knee. Coach Bump Elliott an- mced that junior Brian Patchen uld replace Cecchini on both the ensive and defensive units. Decchini was helped from the ne early in the first quarter .h Michigan in possession of the 1. On the next play from scrim- ,ge with fourth and inches to for the first down, the Wol- ines fumbled the ball and Pur- e recovered it. The Boilermakers nt on to score. Michigan's pass defense will suf- a set back in the loss of Cec- ni, who had intercepted three sses, one each in Michigan's first 'ee contests. Timberlake Starting Dn the brighter side though, it ne as no surprise to anyone en Elliott announced yesterday t "in all probability" he would rt junior Bob Timberlake at arterback against Minnesota s Saturday at Minneapolis. Jntil last week's game, Timber- e had--engineered only one 4se- s of plays for the Wolverines s year. He apparently had won starting signal caller's job dur- fall practice, but a shoulder ury prior to the opener with uthern Methodist sidelined him til his last minute appearance the 23-12 loss to the Boiler- ,kers. Bob Chandler had started at quarterback against Purdue, but was quickly replaced by Frosty Evashevski until the final minutes of the contest. With Michigan trailing 23-0 and many fans al- ready leaving the stadium, Elliott called for Timberlake, who pro- ceeded to spark the team to two quick touchdowns. "We hadn't really planned on bringing in Timberlake," Elliott commented. "We didn't know how ready he was, but we felt that the circumstances warranted bringing him in. We had to give him a try sooner or later, anyhow." With his two predecessors only completing four of ten pass at- tempts for 44 yards, Timnberlake came close to even outshining Purdue's Ron DiGravio by throw- ing the pigskin 16 times and con- necting on ten for 133 yards. Di- Gravio had about the same per- centage, completing 14 of 25 for 198 yards. On Michigan's first touchdown drive, Timberlake continued to run the out-of-bounds pass pattern to ends John Henderson and Craig Kirby. Fullback Mel Anthony ran the ball to the Purdue 8, and five plays later Timberlake dove into the end zone for the tally. The conversion pass attempt to Jack Clancy failed. it was obvious that the ensu- ing kickoff warranted an on-side kick and Timberlake did not dis- appoint the crowd nor the Boiler- makers. The ball seemed to be too hot to handle for one of the Purdue linemen, and Michigan's end Jim Conley wound up with the ball. In two plays, Michigan scored again. A 28-yard pass to end Bill' Laskey, who bobbled it twice before finally clutching the ball, and a 14-yard jaunt by Timberlake gave the Maize and Blue six more points on the scoreboard. The try for the two point conversion failed again. Better in the End? In its last three games, Michigan has scored three touchdowns and driven close for another in the fourth quarter of the contests- one against Navy, two against Pur- due, and a close one against Mich- igan State. Elliott remarked, "I really don't know why the team seems to look better towards the end of the games. The quarterbacks can't be blamed for being too conservative in the beginning and not calling certain pass patterns which are run more frequently at the end. The signal callers run the plays they feel will work under the cir- cumstances." Purdue scored two quick touch- downs in the first quarter, both direct results from recovering Michigan fumbles. "Those two. bad breaks really hurt us," Elliott con- tinued. "It certainly would have been'a different ball game if we hadn't found ourselves down by 14 points in the first quarter," he concluded.
