THE MICHIGAN DAILY TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15,1903 THE MICHIGAN DAILY TUESIMY. OCTOBER 15. 1883 ~ .1 I i all, Winter Coats o Display Changes See Variety By ALICE FIALKIN V he trend in fall and winter ts for girls has changed again, iging in exciting and different rics and styles. 'he biggest alteration is in the v "architectural" lines. These lude the princess, empire line 1 A line along with the stand- boy's coat. 'ull coats with billowy sleeves e gone out of fashion, the late phasis being on slim and form ing coats. Fur collars are no longer in stayle for everyday wear although they are still acceptable for dress occasions. The furs used are fox and mink. "Double-breasted coats are very in," said an Ann Arbor merchant, describing what she thought to be one of the most important changes of the season. "That's one thing you'll see everyplace." Another popular addition to the coat is the belt. Suede cloth jackets are more fashionable than ever this year, especially with matching suede slacks. Suede is also used for col- lars on coats although - the trend is away from the suede coat itself. Longer Coats Coats have been lengthened to reach the middle of the leg. Sleeves are slightly longer too. The newest coat fabrics are long-haired fleecy fabrics of mo- hair, tweeds, and herringbones. These new fabrics are accentuated by new colors. Plaids, stripes and coats of muted colors and of more than one color seem to be catch- ing on very well. Held over from last year is the cape or poncho. One very stylish example modeled recently was a cape of soft blue mohair with a dark blue plaid lining in the hood. All in all the season is one of novelty and beauty with an em- phasis on femininity. An Upcoming' Hat Trends By JOHN WEILER Women's hat trends this fall are pointing in two distinct directions, sporty hats and fabric hats made to look like furs. One famous New York designer suggested that each woman should own at least five new hats each season. In his list he includes: one for country weekends; one for a sut; one for cocktails; and one for evenings. Colorful styles are also stressed by this designer.bInstead of the shock produced by "weird coif- fures," he believes hats should be as fashion complements. Variety But the styles of all the design- ers are as varied as the other fashions this season. Hats for town are as sporty and slouchy as "tweeds, sturdy boots and off- beat furs." For the city fashions, simple, high-crowned hats are very much in style. A bow band or facing of suede is often added to these furry felt hats. On the Garbo-type brimmed felts a chin tie is used to hold down one side. Popular Bowler The bowler, which has been the style in France, is now beginning to become popular in this country. The bowler, known in France as the "melon" because of its shape, has been selling at an astounding rate of 25,000 each month. Madras has long been a major status symbol among many social groups on campus who consider it the epitomy of the "cool col- legiate look." Among the men, madras sport- coats, bermudas, shirts, ski par- kas, and watch bands are defin- itely "in." It is even rumored one fraternity man refused to attend a big dance because his madras sportcoat was not back from the cleaners. New Innovations There are few articles of women's clothing that cannot now be purchased in madras. Besides dresses, blouses, slacks and purses, madras glass cases, headbands, scarves, and madras- trimmed wool skirts are rapidly being developed and sold out. The "genuine bleeding madras" from India (which is also the most expensive) holds the ultimate status and is generally considered the only kind worth buying. Laundry Problems However, this often presents washing problems. One coed con- fides that she accidentally put a madras blouse in with a load of white wash and now has a multi- color wardrobe. Another confessed that her ma- dras raincoat had "bled" all over a new olive green outfit and turn- ed it into bright chartreuse.
