SIX THE MICHIGAN DAILY SUNDAY, UG"1OBER> 13, 1963 SIX THE MICHIGAN DAILY SUNDAY. OCTOBER 13. 1963 I IG TEN ROUNDUP: Badger Offense Rolls, 38-20 Football Satur day By The Associated Press MADISON-Wisconsin launched defense of their Big Ten football championship by wrecking Pur- due's vaunted defense for a 38-20 victory yesterday behind the bril- liant leadership of junior quarter- back Hal Brandt. The Badgers, ranked fifth in the. nation after two straight non-con- ference victories, overpowered Pur- due after stopping two scoring threats early in, the first period. Brandt, who served as under- study to the heralded Ron Vander- Kelen last 'season, scored once and connected on 14 of 22 passes for 196 yards and one touchdown. The Badgers stunned Purdue with an 18-yard march which was capped by Brandt's sneak from the two late in the first period, and they later rolled 50 yards for the second touchdown. Purdue's Ron DiGravio, a har- assed man throughout the after- noon, hit Jim Morel for a 25-yard scoring pass in the third quarter before Wisconsin launched a 72- yard march which Holland ended by racing through a big hole from four yards out on the second play of the fourth period. * * * Buckeyes Tie Illini COLUMBUS-Dick Van Raap- horst broke the Big Ten field goal record for the second straight week as he kicked a 49-yarder in the last two minutes to pull Ohio State into a 20-20 tie with Illinois. A crowd. of 83,712, biggest in Buckeye history, sat. quietly in the last two seconds as the senior from Ligonier, Pa., missed an al- most impossible one from 57 yards which would have pulled the game out for Ohio State. Van Raaphorst's boot, which ec- lipsed his 48-yarder against Indi- ana a week ago, provided a fit- ting climax to as wild and wooly a game as these teams have played since before the turn of the cen- tury. Only one of the five touchdowns came on a drive of any length. Each team converted a close-in fumble and intercepted pass for a pair of scores. The Bucks, unscored on in two previous games, saw that record shattered in the first quarter when Illinois scored on a fourth-and-one play. Ohio's lone first-half threat came when Don Harkins, third- string halfback, went 61 yards up the middle to the Illini 23 the first time he had carried the ball this year. The Bucks settled for a 27- yard field goal, however, and were down 7-3 at the half. In the third period, Tom Kieh- fus of Ohio intercepted a pass on the Illinois 19 and fullback Matt Snell made it into the end zone in two plays. On the kickoff Jim Grabowski fumbled, Bill Spahr recovered on the 19 for Ohio, and six plays later substitute fullback Willard San- der scored to give Ohio a 17-7 edge. Illinois made its bid in the final Paul Warfield's fumble on the Ohio 19 and Taliaferro passed two yards for the touchdown. Three minutes later Taliaferro threw 55 yards to Price, who carried to the Ohio four, from where Jim War- ren plunged in for the counter which gave the Illinois a 20-17 edge, setting the stage for Van Raaphorst's record field goal. * * * Wildcats Claw Gophers EVANSTON-Passing star Tom- my Myers, badly harassed for three quarters, suddenly found the range with two touchdown passes in a wild last peribd which gave Northwestern a 15-8 Big Ten foot- ball victory over Minnesota yester- day. The contest went scoreless un- til the first play of the fourth quarter when Myers completed a 64-yard touchdown pass to soph end Mike Buckner. This broke open what had been almost a dull struggle in which Myers had three passes intercept- ed and fumbled the ball away a fourth time while Minnesota play- ed a plodding, possession game. After Northwestern's 80-yard first scoring strike, Minnesota came to life under substitute quar- terback Larry Peterson and went 75 yards in 15 plays to score. Then Peterson shocked North- western with a quick dart around Northwestern's same left side for a two-point conversion, and it ap- peared the Gophers had the game wrapped up 8-7. But with about eight minutes left, Myers really started hitting the target and began another 80- yard scoring drive, capped with a two-point conversion. * * * Indiana Errs Again IOWA CITY-Quarterback Fred Riddle threw five touchdown pass- es-a Big Ten record-in Iowa's 37-26 football victory over error- prone Indiana yesterday. The Hoosiers, who lost their third straight conference test, were never in contention after two early passes by Frank Stavroff were in- tercepted and Hoosier fullback Tom Nowatzke fumbled twice. Iowa cashed in on all four op- portunities with Riddle's passes and a 25-yard field goal by Jay Roberts. Indiana was additionally handi- capped by the loss of halfback Marv Woodson, who left the game with a knee injury early in the first quarter. Longhorns Thunder Past Dethroned Sooners, 28-7 $y The Associated Press r DALLAS - Tommy Ford and Duke Carlisle led a thunderous Texas ground attack that knocked down the nation's No. 1 team- Oklahoma-28-7 yesterday. Texas, rated No. 2 and seeking the top spot, smothered Oklahoma the first half while running up a 14-0 lead, and then more -than matched the rallying Sooners in the second half. Ford, the guy who likes to run over people, ran over a lot of them Saturday as he ripped through the big Sooner line for 77 yards. Carlisle, who ran about as much although having to handle the quarterbacking duties, too, ripped out 62 yards. Oklahoma had the ball for only six plays in'the first period and just 10 in the second and the Sooners never got past midfield under their own power the entire first half. Gators Turn Tide TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Under- dog Florida swept third-ranked Alabama off its feet yesterday, scoring a 10-6 football victory and handing Coach Paul Bryant his first loss at home since coming to Alabama, six years ago. The Gators, who had a 1-1-1 record, went ahead 3-0 in the first quarter, on Bob Lyle's 42-yard field goal and rolled their lead up to 10-0 in the final quarter on halfback Dick Kirk's 41-yard touchdown dash. This climaxed a 75-yard drive. It was only then that vaunted Alabama scored. Quarterback Joe Namath plunged over from one- foot out. The two-point conversion play was smothered. Pass interceptions and fumbles killed Alabama's chances of con- tinuing its unbeaten string. The Florida Gator line refused to be buffaloed by the vaunted Alabama offense, repeatedly causing Ala- bama backs to fumble. Only two goal-line- stands by 'Bama held down the margin. Irish Top Trojans SOUTH BEND - Sophomore Ken Ivan's 33-yard field goal in the final six minutes of the game gave Notre Dame a 17-14 football upset of Southern California yes- terday as the Irish unveiled a smashing new backfield combina- tion. Notre Dame took senior quarter- back Frank Budka out of moth- balls and turned loose rookie run- ning whiz Bill Wolsfi for the first time. They ripped the seventh- ranked Trojans apart before a screaming overflow crowd of 59,- 135. It was Budka's smashes that mainly drove the Irish 74 yards in the final quarter. And when the Trojans held, Ivan, 190-pound end from Massillon, Ohio, calmly planted the ball through the up- rights for the winning three points. .I PICTURE PAGE BY JAMES KESON ARROW NATIONAL AD C-292 Greet the shirt with an Oxford education .~ibyu.--RO---4 Any scholar will appreciate this new Decton oxford shirt... the latest graduate to the world of wash-and- wear by ARROW.
