s8 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Marksman Shatters Michigan Defense (Continued from Page 1) victory over Southern Methodist. On 'avy's second series from 1 scrimmage, the Middies drove down to Michigan's 11 yard-line but lost the ball via a fumble re- covered by Wolverine halfback John Rowser. With Frosty Evashevski calling the signals, the Wolverines drove to the Navy 36 before surrender- 4 ing the ball. The Middies then drove to the Michigan 43 before punting. Unable to move the ball, Michigan called in sophomore MICHIGAN DAILY CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING RATES Frank Stagg to punt. Stagg's punt went only 15 yards giving Navy a first down on Michigan's 33 yard-line. Four plays later Navy was lead- ing 6-0. The key play was the Middies first from scrimmage, a 15 yard pass from Staubach to end Jim Campbell. Staubach rolled around left end for the score. Fred Marlin kicked the extra point. The Midshipmen tallied their second in the closing seconds of the first half. Taking the ball on their own 20, Staubach set up the score by calling five straight run- ning plays. With six seconds re- maining, Staubach hit halfback Johnny Sai on the Michigan 25 and the fleet halfback scampered all the way for a 54 yard, pass- and-run combination. Marlin's conversion attempt was wide and the Middies held a 13-0 halftime lead. Pick-Off Play A pass interception by Navy halfback Ed Orr gave the Middies their third score. Evashevski's pass intended for end Jim Conley was picked off by Orr on the Michigan 24 yard-line. Orr returned it to the Michigan five. Three plays later fullback Pat Donnelly hit left guard from the one-foot-line and hit pay dirt. Middies Sail Marlin's kick was true and the Middies led 20-0. It was time for Michigan to take the initiative and coach Bump El- liott put Chandler in at quarter- back. Finding ends Craig Kirby and Henderson in the open, Chandler directed the Wolverines from the Michigan 40 to the Navy 38. On second down with nine yards to go, Chandler hit Henderson with a bomb in the end zone for the first Michigan score. Quarter- back Bob Timberlake kicked the extra point. The Midshipman, driven by the infallible Staubach, came right back to put the game completely on ice. Navy started on their own 20 and moved the 80 yards in nine plays. In this series Staubach passed three times and ran twice: Two passes, one to end Gary Kell- ner and the other to end Neil Henderson, moved the Middies from their own 37 to the Michigan 18 yard-line. Superman Run? The Middie superman then ran for 10 yards. The touchdown pass could have been one of the most sensational ever seen in Michigan Stadium. Staubach dropped back to pass but saw no one open., Michigan, putting a big rush on Staubach drove him back to at least the 25 yard-line. Then with at least two Wolverine tacklers hanging on, Staubach sidearmed a bullet to Henderson on the one and the end scored. The conver- sion attempt was fumbled. Michigan scored its second and last touchdown in the closing sec- onds of the game. Again hitting Henderson and Kirby, Chandler moved Michigan 83 yards in eight plays. With one second left, Chandler hit Henderson in the end zone. A two-point conversion attempt ended in an incompleted pass and the game ended 26-13. The Middies outgained Michigan in total offense 391 to 228, and, the men from Annapolis had 18 first downs as compared with Michigan's 16. No Favorites Staubach didn't have a favorite target. He had eight of them. Donnelly picked off three passes while four Middies had two each and three had one each. Sai -who caught only one pass, the TD bomb in the closing seconds of the first half, had the most receiving yardage, 54. The Annapolis signalcaller ac- tually picked up 94 yards rushing but lost 24 for a net of 70. Still he was far and away the leading rusher on the gridiron yesterday. Michigan's Henderson with six receptions for 103 yards was the leading receiver. Kirby, playing in his first game, caught four arials for 41 yards. Michigan was bothered through- out the game with injuries. Tackle Bill Yearby and guard and cap- tain Joe O'Donnell were both side- lined with head injuries. Both are expected to be in action next week aaginst Michigan State. Halfback Dick Rindfuss, 'Michi- gan's leading rusher for the sec- ond straight week with-33 yards was sidelined in the third period' with a knee injury. He'is expected to play next week.
