THE MICHIGAN DAILY THURsDA rnet Affirms States' Rights SPEAKS ON OTHER ISSUES: Durant Gives Support To Goldwater Drive = By JOHN WEILER Richard Durant, 14th Congres- sional District Republican Party Chairman, told the Young Repub- licans Tuesday night that he over- whelmingly supports Sen. Barry Goldwater (R-Ariz) for the 1964 Republican presidential nomina- tion. Durant did not expect Gold- water's support would build up as fast and as high as it has this quickly. "Here is a very rare case of the office seeking the man," he said, but cautioned that he was not sure Goldwater had decided to seek actively the Republican nom- ination. It would be harder for Gold- water to receive the Republican nod, Durant surmised, than to win in the general election and that Goldwater was no sacrifice can- didate. Although his most optimistic guess for Michigan support would be nine party votes, Durant es- timated that there are more than one third of the delegates nation- ally in favor of Goldwater. Although Durant was threaten- ed many times by fellow Republi- cans, he worked for the party and Gov. George Romney, because he was an elected officer of the party. Durant said he dropped out of the John Birch Society last year in order to save face for the Republican party. He did and still does believe in the society and now thinks that dropping out was a mistake. Durant suggested that Romney's tax plan should be "spending re- form rather than tax reform." Detailing the concentration of Republican power across the na-1 tion, he explained that it varies' among three groups-the elected officials, fund raisers and organiza- tion men. In certain sections of the country this power is stronger in one group than the others. Durant commented that the Democrats are definitely in trouble nationally. "The Louis Harris Polls of Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana shows Democrats have lost a lot of strength," he said. This has been caused by deficit spending and the racial question he said. He predicted that the Com- munists would stage a "dramatic peace offering" in the summer of 1964 in order to get Kennedy re- elected, but that they would prob- ably cheat on the treaty after the election. Miller Given Panhellenic Appointment By MARILYN KORAL Janet Miller, '61, has been appointed the Panhellenic coun- selor. The responsibility was previous- ly held by Mrs. Elizabeth Leslie, associate director of student or-1 ganizations and activities. Miss Miller will fully assume all of the Panhellenic advisory functions Mrs. Leslie fulfilled, with the exception of rush counseling. In this area she will: be assisted by advisor to the Michigan League Mrs. Robert Clark. A graduate of the University, Miss Miller was connected with the S c h o o 1 of Interpretation at Florence, Italy. While a student she was a member of the Women's Judiciary Council and a campus sorority. Miss Miller com- mented that she felt her back- ground in student organizations would be of help to her in her new position. The Office of Student Affairs "has been looking around for an advisor for some time," Mrs. Les- lie explained. In the original plan from which the OSA was formed autonomous positions were de- voted for advisors to fraternities and sororities. While John Feld- kamp took over the fraternity ad- visory position, a separate Pan- hellenic counselor had not yet been appointed. As Panhellenic counselor Miss Miller will be responsible for in- terviewing and advising all officers and receiving the reports of the various committees. ,In addition, she will attend the Panhellenic' executive and presidents' counci meetings and be "a consultant to any revisions or changes in rush in the future," Mrs. Leslie said.' Technically, Miss Miller is re- sponsible to Mrs. Leslie, and will report to her periodically The League Presents DANCE PARTIES Thursday Evenings Sign up for the Whole Series I STATIONERY PENCILS MATCHES PLAYING CARDS COASTERS ORDERS SHOULD BE PLACED NOW TO INSURE DELIVERY IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS Ramsay Printers, Inc.
