iott Readies Team for Opener

weeks of general practice, is El-
liott's goal this week. Yesterday
the usually light Monday practice
was a little tougher than usual
since the team did not have a
game or scrimmage last Saturday.
Finer Points
The Wolverines will be concen-
trating more on the finer points
of the game this week than pre-
viously according to Elliott. Yes-
terday practice ended with punt-
ing drills, for example.
Elliott had a few comments
about the SMU team. Thinking of
seven games last fall in which the
Mustangs lost by an average of
less than five points he said,
"Southern Methodist has an ex-
cellent defense. They've got a
youngteam back from last year
plus a good sophomore group."
DALLAS (P)-Southern Metho-
dist held a long, hard workout
yesterday and coach Hayden Fry
said he wasn't pleased with it.
"They haven't started pushing
themselves to the fullest," he said.
Jimmy Taylor, sophomore full-
back, returned to full practice af-
ter being out ever since workouts
started Sept. 1. He had a knee in-
jury.

Phi Kappa Psi smashed a 24-
year old team golf record, high-
lighting the annual I-M golf com-
petition over the weekend held on
the Michigan golf course.
Phi Kappa Psi's 318 eclipsed Psi
Upsilon's mark of 326, set in 1939.
The victory was the first for Phi
Kappa Psi in golf since 1936. Jack
Klein, with a 74; John Neis, 78;'
Tom Stevens, 82, and Bob Larsen,
84, combined to make the record
performance.
Klein also turned in the med-
alist card for social fraternities
with his 74.

Set Retrial
For 11Butts
ATLANTA (A') - Attorneys for
the Saturday Evening Post will
argue Oct. 16 for a new trial of
Wally Butts' libel suit or for a re-
duction of a $3.06 million judg-
ment awarded the former Georgia
Athletic Director by a Federal
Court jury.
District Judge Lewis R. Morgan
set the hearing yesterday. Post
attorneys will press for a retrial on
grounds that the jury was preju-
diced and the award was exces-
sive. As an alternative, they will
ask for a cut in the judgment,
one of the largest in legal history.
