THE MICHIGAN DAILY litical Groups Offer Students Opportunities for Education, Actkl - University students wishing to express their political beliefs have ample opportunity to do so through the numerous politically oriented groups on campus. Most of these groups work in two main ways. To foster educa- tion and knowledge among mem- .t bers of the University community they resort to a number of pro- grams. Speakers, both local and national, are brought to campus to give talks at open meetings on topics of interest to the group. . Sometimes panel discussions are held and movies are shown for the same purpose, Occasionally a club will sponsor an informal non-credit course on some broad topic such as peace. Students sign up and attena one or more times a weex The second approach used by t ese clubs is through action and monstratiori. Clubs attached to political parties often take an active part in campaigns, ringing doorbells and distributing litera- ' ture. Civil rights groups resort to picketing local places practicing discrimination and sometimes call for boycotts of stores. Peace groups also hold marches, and also hand out literature and sponsor letter writing campaigns to congressmen. Occasionally University stu- dents, usually members of a group, travel to various parts of the country to take part in a nation- wide demonstration. Whether the student is a mem- ber of the far left or far right (or somewhere in between), he can find a group that fits his leanings. ACWR .. The Association for Commitment to World Responsibility was pri- marily involved in setting up a United Nations University. In its desire to establish such an insti- tution, students have gone to Paris to speak to UNESCO administra- tors about the possibility of put- ting such a university under the sponsorship of that organization. Students have also gone to the Helsinki Youth Festival to sound out international student opinion. Last year, the group initiated an essay contest on the implementa- tion of peace plans. Friends of SNCC... University Friends of the Stu- dent Non - violent Coordinating Committee is an organization. de- voted to publicizing and obtaining funds for SNCC. SNCC is an ac- tivist group fighting for civil rights for Negroes in the South. All Its members are working and living with families in the various places of operation. Friends of SNCC is primarily a student organization which par- takes in various rights' battles here in Ann Arbor in addition to its other work. It sponsors speakers and on Aug. 25 will be one of several sponsors of, a freedom rally where SNC bead John Lewis will speak. Presently Friends of SNCC is training field secretaries to work in Ann Arbor to inform the com- munity about the racial problem in the area. SNCC is hoping to gather its inforpnation from various sourc- es, such as the Human Relations Commission and the Survey Re- search Center. Michigan Center for Education in Politics now at Wayne State University. Staff representatives (faculty members) are at a number of the colleges. It is affiliated with the ten year old national organization and membership is open to both parti- sans and those who have made no political commitment. Annual programs have included a "Party Leader Day," with state party leaders gathering for speech- es, party caucuses and a luncheon with the students. Recently, the organization has instituted a program of intern- ships. Students visit the State Leg- islature and work with one of the legislators for a number of weeks to learn how the government oper- ates. There are also eight week, summer internships. Peace Ceter .. . The University Community Peace Center has as its goal doing the necessary work in this community to advance ideas and attitudes es- sential to peace. They also try to stimulate other organizations to do similar work. During the past year the group has had several displays, present- ed various speakers, discussion groups and films. The basic concern of the orga- nization is "peace and freedom," and they believe that support for this task must first be built on a personal level. Along with various programs which the group will sponsor dur- ing the coming year, it will con- tinue its afternoon displays on the Diag and in the Fishbowl. Socialist Club... The Socialist Club took part in a number of controversial issues during the past year. Through the forums and speak- ers, it attempts to educate and bring information before Univer- sity students. The forums have covered such topics as "University and Social Change" and "Churches and Social Change." YAF... Campus Young Americans for This organization also takes an active part in campaigning when election time draws near. In this, it strives actively for the victory of Democratic candidates at the polls. Young Republicans.. . The Young Republican Club acts as a student affiliate of the Re- publican Party. Like its political opposition, the YD's, it serves both as an educational as well as an active political organization. During the gubernatorial race last year, YR's sponsored a Rom- ney Rally in which the present governor came and spoke. During the election, YR's a tively campaigned, working o of city and county party hea quarters. As with the elections in the pa this year YR's will work me along the lines of education bringing speakers and forming c cussion groups on campus. Republican State Chairman the Central Committee Arthur; liot is scheduled to speak here Sept. 5. An Issues Conference will held again this fall which will d cuss current topics of national a state government. PEACE TALK-A group of more than 5000 students from all over the country, including about 100 from the University, sits near the George Washington monument in Washington D.C. listening; to a speaker urging progress in peace and disarmament. The University students chartered two busses to attend the demonstration in February 1962 which also included picketing the White- House. Freedom is a part of a national conservative organization of col- lege students and young profes- sional people, One of its main tasks is re- cruiting members from every cam- pus and community. Programs are developed locally to fit the partic- ular needs of each community. All, 'however, strive toward the Conservative objectives of the or- ganization. During past years,. YAF has taken part in debates on HUAC, taking the position that the com- mittee should not be abolished. The group has also issued state- ments urging the resumption of nuclear testing. Young Democrats. The Young Democratic Club applies the ideals and beliefs of the Democratic Party to the cam- pus: It'brings in speakers and works on campus to implement goals of the party. Such speakers as Michigan Con- gressman-at-Large Rep. Neil Stae- bler, Chairman of the Democratic' StateCentral Committee Zolton Ferency and former Governor John Swainson have been brought to Ann Arbor under the sponsor- ship of the YD's. Under the sponsorship of the State -YD's, the Issues Conference was held at the University last year. YD groups from the entire state came to the University to dis- cuss various topics of state and national importance. There is a good possibility that the confer- ence will be held here again this year. Students . 0 0 Welcome to Ann Arbor RAMSAY PRINTERS, INC. The club also co-sponsored the showing of "Operation Correc- tion," a film put out by the Amer- ican Civil Liberties Union in an- swer to "Operation Abolition." This latter film concerned itself with 1961 protest riots in San Francisco. These riots were in pro- test to the House Committee on Un-American Activities investiga- tion, then going on in that city. Sponsoring speakers and sym- posiums is another facet of this organization. In the past, it has sponsored a program along with Voice which featured Carl Brad- en and Frank Wilkenson, both of whom were convicted of contempt of Congress for refusing to answer questions before ,HUAC. The group is not affiliated with any national party. Voice... Established in 1960, Voice is a liberal, educational and political action organization. Last year it held a series of "Voice Forums" Tuesday nights, exploring current issues such as civil liberties, peace, University reform and politics in world affairs. It endorses and supports candi- dates for Student Government Council and at present there are four Voice backed students on that body. In addition to forums, Voice also sponsors speakers and comes out with a newsletter. Voice is the University chapter of Students for a Democratic So- ciety, a national student educa- tional organization of the left, Through SGC, Voice tries to im- plement its concepts for change on campus. * STATIONERY " TICKETS * POSTERS INVITATIONS of all kinds * PROGRAMS * HANDBILLS * BOOKLETS * BUSINESS FORMS Ramsay Printers, Inc..
