Raimey Put on waivers After Injury-Filled Year BIG TEN PRACTICE NOTES: Injuries, RainDampen Spirits By The Associated Press WINNIPEG - Forner Michigan' halfback D a v e Raimey, still plagued by the shoulder ailments which bothered him last year, was placed on waivers by the Winni- peg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League yesterday. A spokesman for the club said the British Columbia Lions have shown an interest in claiming the 195-pound player for the $350 waiver price. Raimey, in his first year with the Bombers, has been on the in- jured list, following a shoulder operation similar to the ones he underwent following the 1962 sea- son for Michigan. He finished out last year as Michigan's leading scorer for the third straight year despite his shoulder problems, which led him to finish out the season with a special harness designed to pinion his arms close to his sides. He played .198 minutes in 1962, and with five touchdowns was the only Wolverine to score more than one. He averaged 3.11 yards Managers Needed Anyone interested in working with the Michigan football team as a varsity manager should contact Gus Schulwitz, senior manager, at the varsity practice field, 3:30 p.m. any weekday afternoon. a carry rushing on 385 yards in 124 tries and caught 11 passes for 45 yards. In the Big Ten, Raimey last year finished in a four-way tie for seventh among the conference scoring leaders with 24 points and ranked fifth in kickoff returns with nine for an average of 16.7 yards. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (k') - Hal Wineland, a junior halfback, was dropped from the squad Wednes- day, trimming the list of football lettermen to 24 on the University of Illinois squad. Wineland started the week as third string left halfback but had fallen to the fifth team when he called it quits. Another missing letterman is Cecil Young, senior from Miami, Fla., who failed to report. Rain Plagues Drills IOWA CITY, Iowa (P) - Rain clouds and wet grounds plagued, the Iowa football team as it ran through a pair of two-hour drills Wednesday. The backs worked on offensive plays and lineman on the blocking dummies in the morning. The first and second units alternated on defense in a light contact work- out against the sophomores and the third and fourth teams labored in a dummy offensive drill. The linemen saw their first heavy contact on defense in the afternoon. There also was a punt- ing drill with Lonnie Rogers, Mickey Moses and Wally Hilgen- berg doing the kicking. * * * Full Scale Drills EAST LANSING () - Michi- gan State's football team contin- ued twice-a-day workouts Wednes- day with a full scale punt drill for the offensive teams and one- on-one drills by linemen giving the Spartans their first contact work. Head Coach Duffy Daugherty would not say when he would hold his first scrimmage. The Spartans will continue to practice twice a day for at least two weeks. Injury Strikes EVANSTON, Ill. (A) - Rich 01- son, senior and leading middle linebacker candidate, suffered a broken thumb on his right hand in scrimmage and will be lost to highly regarded Northwestern's football team six to eight weeks. Coach Ara Parseghian disclosed Wednesday the 214-pound Olson, from Delavan, Wis., sustained the fracture when his thumb hooked in another player's jersey during a Tuesday scrimmage. Olson's right hand will be in a cast until mid-October. * * * Chonko Impressive COLUMBUS, Ohio (R) - Ar nold Chonko, left-handed thrower from Parma, Ohio, moved into Ohio State's quarterback picture Wednesday, and Coach Woody Hayes predicted "he'll see a lot of action." Chonko, a 195-pound 6-foot-3 junior, played 235 minutes on de- fense last year, missed spring practice to bat .355 for the Buck- eye baseballers, but has been im- pressive in the fall football work- outs. His two-way ability elevated him into the spotlight, due to the new restrictive substitution rules. * * * New Halfbacks LAFAYETTE, Ind. (4) - New faces appeared at the halfback spots on Purdue's No. 1 unit Wed- nesday as the football squad ex- ercised in its first contact drill of the season.
