bELRSIIED frh

By WILLIAM BENOIT
As a result of a meeting Nov. 9
with the Michigan Department of
Instruction's Curriculum Commit-
tee on Better Human Relations,
publishers have agreed to consider
at the individual company level
means of revising treatment of
minority groups in textbooks, com-
nittee chairman Mary Brand re-
ported Saturday.
The committee met in Lansing
with representatives of 11 pub-
lishing firms, including University
Press.
"We recommended that text-
books show integrated pictures,
and suggested that social studies
texts discuss the nature of pre-
judice and how it has affected
minority groups," Miss Brand said.
In response to the committee's
invitation, University Press sent
a representative to the conference.
However, results of the discussion
had no direct bearing for Univer-
sity Press as the only junior and
senior high school textbooks it
publishes are for Latin classes,
editor Walter A. Donnelly re-
ported.

In recent weeks, the textbook
issue has become of some concern
in Detroit, with both the National
Association for the Advancement
of Colored People and the Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai B'rith
protesting the use of a history text
in the city's public schools.
This book was scored by the or-
ganizations for rendering an in-
adequate and distorted picture of
minority group development in the
United States.
Hodgins To Run
For City Council
Dallas R. Hodgins, assistant re-
search mathematician at the Uni-
versity's Radiation Laboratory, an-
nounced his Democratic candidacy
for the City Council from the
Third Ward. The seat is presently
held by Republican Henry V.
Aquinto. He is the first Democrat
to enter the council race in the
Third Ward, and the second to
seek city offices in the April 1
election. A mayor and five council-
men will be- chosen.
