'. .. .. .. i Funeral services for Prof. Rus- sell W. Bunting, dean emeritus of the dental school, who died Thurs- day morning, were held yesterday. Prof. Bunting was born and edu- cated in Ann Arbor and received his degrees of doctor of dental surgery and doctor of dental sci- ence from the University. He was a member of the dental school faculty from 1904 until 1950, when he retired. Prof. Bunting is the author of "Oral Pathology" and "Oral Hy- giene and Treatment of Parodon- tal Diseases." He received the Cal- lahan Memorial Medal of the Ohio State Dental Society in 1929 and the Fauchard Medal in 1930. GOP Leader Resigns Post Norman J. Randall, chairman of the Republican City Committee, yesterday withdrew his petition for mayor and resigned his chair- manship. The resignation and withdrawal will contribute to recent specula- tions about disunity within the Ann Arbor Republican Party and predictions of more resignations from the city committee. Randall said his resignation as chairman was for "personal rea- sons" and his withdrawal from the mayoral campaign was "for the best interests of the party." He had been chairman of the Repub- lican City Committee for three consecutive years and one year from 1958-59. To fill the vacant position left' by Randall, County Republican Chairman Wendell W. Hobbs is expected to reactivate a nominat- ing committee. Randall would have been a can- didate in the Republican primary against incumbent Mayor Cecil O. Creal in February. While in retirement, Prof. Bunt- ing served as dental consultant to the Office of Civil Defense in Washington, D.C., and in Battle Creek. Marvin L. Niehuss, executive vice-president of the University, said that "his death, which follows so closely upon the death of his colleague Dr. Francis Vedder, marks a great loss to the Univer- sity, to the community and to the profession." Prof. Bunting, a fellow of the American College of Dentists, is a past president of the Internation- al Association for Dental Research, Pan-American Dental Association and the Michigan State Dental Society. He was an honorary member of the Swedish Dental Society and the British Dental Association. Prof. Bunting is also a past pres- ident of the International Asso- ciation for Dental Research and the Pan-American Dental Asso- ciation. College Starts Honor Group The engineering college has in- stituted a dean's honor list to recognize outstanding students each semester. To be on the list, an under- graduate in engineering must have earned a grade point average of 3.50 or better for one semester while taking at least 12 hours. The list is also open to engineering students in the summer session. The dean's honor list was ini- tiated because the engineering honors convocation recognizes only those students who maintain the required grade point average for the whole year, Arlen R. Hell- warth, assistant dean and secre- tary of the engineering school, said.
