Quarterback Duane Blaska, able to complete only 6 of 21 passes to that point, hit end Ray Zitzloff on a 29-yard scoring strike with 10:23 left in the game. Colin Versich added the extra point to decide the titantic defensive struggle. The Minnesota victory set up next week's showdown for the Big Ten championship against Wis- consin at Madison. Both are 5-1 in the conference. Zitzloff took the ball away from two defenders, Tom Bloom and Ronald Meyer, at the Purdue three and slipped into the end zone for the game's lone touchdown. 4 Kicker Skip Ohl had staked Purdue to a 6-0 halftime lead EVANSTON - Michigan State halted sophomore Tom Myers, the nation's leading passer, and ended Northwestern's Big Ten title and Rose Bowl hopes 31-7 yesterday. Overcoming a rash of their own mistakes, the Spartans'turned a' blocked punt and a pass intercep- tion into touchdowns and com- pletely dominated play a f t e rl Northwestern had grabbed an ear-I ly 7-0 lead. Off Balance Myers, who went into the game with 104 completions in 160 at- tempts for 1,403 yards and 13' touchdowns, was kept off balance throughout the game as the hard- charging Michigan State defensive line threw him for losses repeated- ly. Myers completed 8 of 24 passes for a net of 47 yards. No less than six times, Michigan State handed the ball to North-j western on fumbles and pass in- terceptions but the W i l d c a t s couldn't take advantage. CHAMPAIGN-Shadowy half- back Lou Holland scored four touchdowns and zoomed fourth- ranked Wisconsin to an easy, but important Big Ten conquest of lowly Illinois 35-6 yesterday. The triumph gpparently gained Wisconsin a Rose Bowl bid, even though the Big Ten season will not close until next Saturday. Holland, 5-feet-10, 180-pound junior, produced three first quar- ter touchdowns on his first four plays of the game as the Badgers hiked their Big Ten record to 5-1 and their over-all mark to 7-1. The Badgers, who were brilliant- ly led by quarterback Ron Vander- Kelen, on this bleak, dreary Dad's Day at Illinois, set the stage for a clinching Big Ten title finale against Minnesota next Saturday at Madison. In view of Minneso- ta's 7-6 conquest of Purdue yester- day, plus the fact the Gophers are ineligible for a Rose Bowl bid, the Badgers apparently nailed down a COLUMBUS-Ohio State got a lot of offensive help from a cou- ple of sparingly-used defensive players yesterday as the Bucks defeated Oregon 26-7 in an inter- sectional contest before 72,828 fans. The rainy-day crowd was as much a shocker as the score since it was the smallest throng to see Ohio in action here in several years. Bill Mrukowski, senior from Elyria, came out of the discards to quarterback the Bucks to vic- tory. Two weeks ago he was so low on the totem pole he did not even make the trip to Ioda. But he was good enough yesterday to score two touchdowns and pilot the Ohio club faultlessly. He was shoved into the signal-calling spot in place of injured John Mum- mey, Chuck Mamula of Martins Ferry, a junior defensice tackle, scored his first points as he took over the place-kicking chores 1230 Packard NO 5-4549 1 momommim Best for wear! McNames, a 196-pound senior, intercepted a pass in the second period and raced 26 yards to the Alabama 14. Two plays later, he went nine yards for a touchdown. And in the fourth period, his jar- ring tackle thwarted a two-point conversion try when Alabama went for broke after its touchdown and Wound up in a state o defeat. Furiou's.Comeback Alabama charged back furiously in a last-minute drive and reach- ed the Tech 14, but defensive spe- cialist Don Toner intercepted a deflected pass with 39 seconds left to play and sealed the tremendous upset. Alabama's touchdown in the fin- al six minutes came after Tech quarterback Billy Lothridge fum- bled a snap from center on fourth down while back to punt. He got the kick off, but an official ruled his knee touched the ground at the Tech 9. Alabama took it over in four plays with halfback Cotton Clark scoring his 14th touchdown of the season from the 2. . * * Fumble Costly LOS ANGELES-Speedy half- back Willie Brown cracked open a tight and fumble-plagued football game with a 56-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to give Southern California a 13-6 victory over a spirited Navy team and run the Trojans' unbeaten streak to eight yesterday. The dangerous Middies from An- napolis had a 4-4 record going into the game and were two-touch- down underdogs to the nationally ranked second-place Trojans but almost scored an upset in the clos- ing minutes. The heartbreaker occurred, with the ball on the Southern Califor- nia five, when fullback Pat Don- nelly fumbled going into the end zone and the ball was recovered by Trojan Gary Potter. It developed that Donnelly was hit hard on the goal line by quar- terback Pete Beathard and a sec- ond jolt by a Trojan tackle, Gary Kirner, completed the disastrous moment. * * * A Power Reborn NORMAN - The Oklahoma Sooners, reborn giants of the mid- lands, cracked through sixth-rank- ed Missouri's vaunted defense for touchdowns at the start of each half yesterday for a 13-0 win over the Tigers. The victory was Oklahoma's fifth in a row in Big Eight confer- ence play and .put the Sooners in sole possession of the conference lead and allowed them to take a big stride toward becoming the conference's representative in the Orange Bowl New Year's Day. Missouri suffered, its first defeat of the season. Nebraska has lost only one conference game and the Sooners must beat the Cornhusk- ers next week to take the confer- ence crown. Oklahoma's d e f e n s e stopped Missouri's rushing attack, best in the nation until yesterday, as cold as the wet 40 degree day. * * * Penn State Awesome WORCESTER - Awesome Penn State, sparked by guard Joe Blas- enstein and quarterback Pete Liske, defeated willing Holy Cross 48-20 yesterday while enhancing its chances for a fourth straight football bowl appearance. A faking magician, Liske steered the east's top-rated power to a breakaway 21-point second period. Liske ran 29 yards behind superb end Dave Robinson's block for one touchdown, passed 43 to Chris Weber and pitched to Junior Pow- ell for the third. A highly-charged underdog Holy Cross squad saw two scoring threats stopped by Blasenstein, a 212-pounder from Philadelphia. He intercepted a pass deflected by teammate Ed Stuckrath early in the game. The Nittany Lions, famed as a November whirlwind, left no doubt about their intentions when they consumed most of the third quar- ter barging 99 yards in 12 plays, y the last of which saw Buddy Tor- ris slam over to pay dirt. * * * Penalties Help FORT WORTH-Clutch runs by Jerry Cook and costly Texas Chris- tian penalties carried Texas to a 14-0 triumph and within a half- game of the Cotton Bowl yester- day. Undefeated Texas, with a 5-0-1 record, now can tie Texas A & M on Thanksgiving Day and clinch the Cotton Bowl spot. It can win the Southwest Confernce cham- pionship withsa victory. Muddy Field Paying no heed to a muddy field, the Longhorns slashed and tore Texas Christian into submission after being repulsed repeatedly by the gritty Horned Frogs in the first half. The Texas defense kept TCU inside its 32-yard line the first two periods, inside its 34 the next and only in the final quarter could the weary Frogs get as far as their 40. Rebels Roll * KNOXVILLE-Louis Guy's 100- yd. runback of a pass interception killed Tennessee's hopes for a tie yesterday and Mississippi rolled toward its first perfect football season in 70 years with a 19-6 vic- tory. The bruising game, played on a rain-soaked field, erupted into a swinging free-for-all late in the fourth quarter after Tennessee scored its lone touchdown on a 16- yard pass from Bobby Morton to John Hudson. Ole Miss, the nation's third- ranked team, was ahead 7-0 in the third period when Guy grabbed Mallon Faircloth's pass in the end zone and outran a horde of Vols for the score. Tennessee was on the Rebel 4 at the time and making a strong bid to score and possibly tie the game. Cadets Nipped NEW YORK - Rick Leeson's placement after Pitt's only touch- down beat Army 7-6 yesterday in a head-knocking football game marred by sloppy ball handling by the Cadets before 23,917 in Yan- kee Stadium. Bob Roeder drove into the end zone from the 4 in the second per- iod after Pitt's Jim Irwin had re- covered John Seymour's fumble on the Army 15. Roeder scored on a fourth-and-2 situation, skirting right end on a power sweep. * * * Auburn Upset AUBURN-Larry Rakestraw fir- ed three touchdown passes to Don Porterfield and led Georgia to a 30 to 21 upset victory yesterday r,ver Auburn. Georgia also scored on a spec- tacular 87-yard pass interception return by Joe Burson and a field goal by Bill McCullough which traveled 48 yards.
