THE MICHIGAN DAILYTED Wolverines By JERRY KALISH with what he calls a feeling It's approximately 668 miles "guarded optimism." And as "next year" approaches head basketball coach Dave Strack isn't exactly pessimistic. The Mich- igan mentor enters his third sea- son at the helm for the Wolverines are expecting Wolverine basketball fortunes to be on the upswing with the return of four regulars, all of whom averaged in double figures, and the availability of some outstanding sophomores who comprised last. winter's freshman team considered by many to be the best in the school's history. And for the first time in recent years, the Wolverines won't be lacking depth. This problem has plagued Strack in his two years here. In his fresh- man year, he had the great John Tidwell but only managed to win two conference games. Last year, too, the Wolverines finished eighth with a 5-.9 mark, and Strack was forced to go with only six or seven players. But now Strack happily notes, "We'll start out with more depth and more Big Ten quality ball- players than when I first came here." Captain Tom Cole, John Harris, i LOWEST PRICES! Strack's third guard, Doug Herner, will be back, along with newcomer soph- omores Bill Buntin and Larry Tre- goning. Cantrell led his Washington High of East Chicago to the Indiana title, Herner sparked Lansing Sex- ton to the Michigan crown, while Cole shot Springfield High into the winner's circle among Illinois preps. Cole, 6'7" senior, will handle one of the forward positions this year. He wound up the season as the Wolverines' top scorer and rebounder and was tenth leading scorer in the Big Ten with a 17.4 average. Though "only" 6'5", John Harris is another big man in the front court. The smallest center in the Big Ten last year, Harris was Michigan's leading rebounder in conference action and placed sixth in that department among the other giants with 163 grabs.
