Renfrew's Problem--No Berenson

PASSING WHIZ GETS CALL:
Chandler To Quarterback M'

1
By STAN KUKLA
Last year the Wolverine hockey
squad finished second in the West-
ern Collegiate Hockey Association,
second in the WCHA playoffs, and
third in the NCAA playoffs.
As the '62-63 squad took the ice
yesterday for their first practice
of the season, old and new faces
were recognized and the loss of
some of last year's stars was, for
the first time, a reality.
Berenson Gone
Gone were Michigan all-time
high-scorer Gordon "Red" Beren-
son, Al Hinnegan, Jerry Kolb, Carl
White, and Bill Kelly.
What will the loss of these five
mean to this year's team? Well,
the five scored 75 goals and made
66 assists for a total of 141 points.
The team scored 372 points on.
150 goals and 22 assists.
That means that these five men
scored half the goals and about
a third of the assists.
On the debit side, they were
assessed 51 penalties for a total

of 126 minutes spent in the sin-I

bin.

Rates as Leader

Berenson rates as the leader of
those that left in all departments
except total minutes in the pen-
alty box. He scored 43 goals,
notched 27 assists and received 17
penalties for a total of 34 minutes.
Kolb nudged Berenson out of the
lead among the graduated seniors
by spending 58 minutes in the
penalty box, even though he too
had 17 penalties.
Head coach Al Renfrew has one
problem this season-who is going
to replace Berenson? The answer
is not immediately evident and
there may be no answer, for Ber-
enson holds the singular distinc-
tion of being the only player to
go directly from college hockey
into the National Hockey League
(and win a berth on the Mont-
real Canadiens, at that).
Only Hay Close
Only one player has accomplish-
ed anything near this feat and he
is Red Hay, of the Chicago Black

Hawks, who spent a season in the
minors before breaking into the
big leagues.
Renfrew realizes that it will be
nearly impossible to replace Ber-
enson and thus figures to build
the team around the loss.
He has the personnel to do this.
Four men from last year's fresh-
man team form the nucleus of
the replacements for the vanished
five.
Roger Galipeau, sophomore from
Nobel, Ontario, is expected to add
some beef to last year's defensive

trio of Don Rodgers, Ross Morri-
son, and Wayne Kartusch (all are
returning this year). Four men
playing on defense are a luxury
that Renfrew did without last
year. This year's backguard can-
not fail to be helped by the ad-
dition of Galipeau.
Three Sophs Slated
On the forward lines, three
sophomores are slated to fill the
gaps and one senior, familiar to
Wolverine hockey fans in another
position, has been switched to the
forward Position.

Dave Butts, last year's goalie
who had a 2.64 goals against
average, skated as a forward in
practice yesterday.
Jack Cole, Gary Butler, and
Marty Reid are the newcomers to
the frontguard.
Returning from last year is
Larry Babcock, elected to fill Ber-
enson's shoes as captain. Babcock
scored 16 goals and had 26 assists
for a total of 42 points, to finish
third among Michigan scorers.
Wilkie Back
Gordie Wilkie, a sophomore last
season, notched 17 goals and 35
assists to take second in the scor-
ing race.
Other frontment returning are
Ron Coristine (39 pts.), Tom
Pendlebury, and John McGonigal.
Bob Gray, last year's stand-out
sophomore goalie, will go all the
way infgoal this year, according
to Renfrew. Renfrew is scrapping
the two-goalie system he has used
for the past two seasons.
But between now and the first
game on Nov. 24, it's a long, hard
road of practicing.
Rugby Team
To Hold Match
After Grid Tilt
The Michigan Rugby team will
have another match at Wines
Field this Saturday immediately
after the Michigan - Wisconsin
football game.
Last Saturday the Wolverines
tied the No. 1 team in the On-
tario Rugby Union, the Toronto
Nomads. The score in the hard
fought game was 0-0.
Some foreign stars on the Mich-
igan team are Mike Burrows of
England, Desmond McVee of Ire-
land, and Phata Winata of New
Zealand. Rugby is an ancestor of
American football. There are 15
men on a team, no equipment is
used, and the game is made up
of two 40 minute halves.
An organizational meeting for
the spring season will be held on
Thursday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. in
the Business Administration Build-
ing. The room number will be
posted in the Building Thursday
night.

Are you frustrated? Do you have nightmares? Does the girl who
sits next to you looking coy say nothing but "no"? If that's the case,
then why not multiply your ailments by trying this week's Grid
Picks contest. The games we've chosen are guaranteed to produce
satisfactory results. And if by' some accident the system doesn't
work-and you happen to come up with the winners in such brain-
twisters as LSU-Mississippi, Air Force-Wyoming, USC-Washington,
etc.-then The Daily will comfort you with two tickets to the Mich-
igan Theatre, now showing "Escape From East Berlin," plus a

deadline is midnight tonight for your entry. One per person, please.

its part in the succession of quar-
terbacks. But Chandler didn't
draw the starting assignment just
because he happens to be the next
signal-caller on the list.
"Chandler proved last week in
the Minnesota game that he can
move the team," said Elliott. "He
has earned the chance to step out
there at the very beginning and
call the plays."
It was Chandler who came off
the bench in the fourth quarter
and tossed the pigskin toward
Harvey Chapman in the end zone.
As the ball reached over the out-
stretched fingers of the Minne-
sota defender, Chapman leaped
high in the air and gathered it in
-well, almost in. He came down
just outside the end zone bound-
ary. Some 50,000 cheers turned in-
to 50,000 boos.
It Was Chandler
Nevertheless it was Chandler
who almost broke the scoreless
string. Maybe he can do Just
that against Wisconsin tomorrow.
He completed just two of nine
passes against the Gophers, but

those two were good for 46 yards.
For the season he has passed for
73 yards, completing four of 17.
And a third was interfered with.
Elliott was' asked what other
changes might be made in the
lineup, in particular whether or
not Bob Timberlake would remain
at a halfback position. "Yes," he
replied, "we plan to use Timber-
lake at half. Also, junior fullback
Bill Dodd will be in there instead
of flankerback Chapman."
Dave Raimey will remain at
right half, of course.
Looking over Michigan injuries,
Elliott said center Don Blanchard
will almost certainly miss the
Wisconsin game. Captain Bob
Brown was at practice yesterday
but he could not run because of
an ankle injury, so it is likely
that sophomore Jim Conley will
start at left end.
