University NO 3-6922 304 S. Thayer NO 5-4855 By EARL POLE University Health Service has been serving the students and fac- ulty of Michigan for nearly 50 years. Providing basic clinical services and a number of specialty clinics, including mental hygiene, the Service is equipped to handle all types of cases except those requir-* ing major surgery, or special test- ing equipment. Health Service has a complete laboratory where all the clinical tests are run. The Service owns an electrocardiograph, a complete laboratory for blood tests, instru- ments for making basal metabolic determinations, and physio-thera- py equipment. Emergency dental facilities and a diagnostic X-ray department are also some of the services offered. Manufactures Drugs Health Service has its own phar- macy and many of the drugs used are manufactured there. Accord- ing to Dr. Morley Beckett, direc- tor of Health Service, one of the finest college or university allergy clinics is located in Health Serv- 'U' Unit Offers Credit Courses To Aid State In 1911 the Board of Regents founded an extention service for establishment of a system so mem- bers of the faculties of the Uni- versity may become available to the people of the state for services at farmer's institutes, educational and lecture associations and lit- erary clubs for the advancement of education. Today the extension service has offices in 10 areas in Michigan, With appr9ximately 16,000 par- ticipants. Study areas include the sciences, liberal. arts, engineering and business as well as courses in such things as civil defense and firemanship. Through the extention service adults may register either for non- credit or credit up to eight hours. Students may attend conferences, lectures and institutes or take correspondence courses. ice. Allergens are individually pre- pared in their own laboratories. Examinations and normal drugs are free to all students taking four hours of work or more at the University and to other students at a small fee. Expensive X-rays and laboratory work are provided at a reasonable rate. The Health Service hours are from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. However, there is a physician on call from Health Service at all times in case of an emergency. Maintain Records Each new student must submit a iedical history and examination before being admitted to the Uni- versity. This starts a folder which is kept for all students. Present files extend back about thirty years. In addition, each student is given a free X-ray when he en- ters the University. The Service has been in opera- tion since 1913 and moved into its present location at 207 Fletch- er Ave. in'April 1940. Infirmary facilities include 50 beds, eight full-time physicians, three psychiatrists, and 15-20 part-time physicians who are on the staff at the medical school. Most of the latter are specialists who are called in for consultation. The budget for Health Service runs about three-quarters of a million dollars a year, part of which the Service is required to raise themselves. The Health Service established on a voluntary basis last year a health insurance plan sponsored by the Student Government Coun- cil. T h r o u g h the environmental health department, campus hous- ing is investigated for sanitation and safety and recommendations are made to. the administration. Phones Service Needs of Campus The number of the University switchboard is NO 3-1511. This number will connect students with various professors and administra- tors, along with college, school and department offices and the coun- seling offices.
