OCTOBER :I .1962y' THE MICHGAN DAIV V :LI V lfl lFU4oy VA iO G r e IMPROVING: Szymanski Captures Linebacker Spot < > v Student Activities Scholarships APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE Friday, October 12.10o Friday, October 19 Requirements: (1) Financial Need (2) Extra-curricular activities (excluding athletics) (3) 2.5 overall average Pick up applications in Student Government Council offices, 1546 Student Activities Building For further information, call Tom Brown, NO 3-0553 By JOHN SCOCHIN A 184-lb. guard is manning the middle linebacker spot for Michi- gan this week when the Wolverines wrestle Michigan State. Senior Dick Szymanski took over starting claim to that position aft- er his play last week against Ar- my, in his first starting assign- ment of the young season. A distant relative of another Dick Szymanski, who made All- America at Notre Dame and play- ed middle-linebacker on the Bal- timore Colts professional cham- pionship teams of 1959 and 1960, the "M" veteran was the defensive standout in last week's victory. Diagnosing the opposing offense well, he made 13 tackles to lead the team in that department. Hurts Knee, The Wolverine lineman tore lig- aments in his knee as a sophomore and underwent surgery. Last year Y he came. back to earn his letter and hopes to remain a regular starter this season. Trainer Jim Hunt said, "Szy- manski's knee healed well and should cause him no trouble. He still uses tape in a game, how- ever, to give it added support." Michigan line coach Bob Holl- way commented, "Szymanski will definitely start this week against Michigan State. Though he's com- paratively small he gets every ounce of energy he has into every tackle." Long Overlooked "Szymanski was overlooked for a long time because of his size. He has quickness and drive and plugs hard all the time. He makes up forhhis lack of size by what he knows about the game," Hunt add- ed. "What makes Szymanski a good player is his football instinct. He can react quickly to different situ- ations, diagnose the play and get there to stop it. A defensive play- er must always be able to think quickly to be ready for what the offense throws at him," added Hollway. The line coach continued, "One of the prime attributes that a de- fenseman must have is intelligence and Szymanski has it, so he's able to get the job done right. Plays To Win "Szymanski may have some trouble against big lines like those of Michigan tSate and Ohio State because lacking size he doesn't have the strength of some of his bigger opponents. He wants to win every game, however, so he al- ways plays that way," Hollway concluded. When the whole offense fires in on him, Szymanski must be at his best. "Your only chance is to hit the man head on and try to halt his progress," he said. The 5'10" senior believes the only way to succeed against bigger op- penents is to try to be quicker than the other fellow and to play hard. Prep Standout Szymanski was a regular guard in high school earning all-city and his team's Most Valuable Player award for Toledo Central Cath- olic, the same school that pro- duced Wolverine teammate Dave Glinka. Come Saturday Szymanski will be doing his bit along with the other two "M" linebackers, Dave Kurtz and John Minko, to keep the big green of MSU safely contained in the annual football season high- light. GRID SELECTION'Sj Contrary to popular belief, The Michigan Daily sports staff does not always pick Michigan to win all its football games. Witness this week. Despite the heat generated by the Michigan-Michigan State riv- alry, the Spartans are the overwhelming choice to beat the Wolverines (take note Michigan, this is a challenge). But whether or not you think Michigan can win, tonight at Mid- night is the deadline for the contest. Bring or mail your entries to The Michigan Daily, 420 Maynard, and if you win two free tickets to the Michigan Theatre, now showing "Lady and the Tramp," and "Almost Angels" and a free subscription to The Football News are yours.
