Michigan made it big in baseball last season,.
It won the NCAA title, stopped to take a breath,
then bested Japan's Hosei University in the best
of five series for the world's collegiate crown.
This was the same Michigan team which lost
its two top stars, catcher Bill Freehan and pitcher
Mike Joyce, to major league bonuses and seemed
destined to an also-ran's position early in the
spring. The Wolverines, however, used great bal-
ance, an alert defense, and clutch hitting to climb
up the ladder of baseball supremacy.,
At Omaha in the two-game knockout NCAA
finals Michigan edged top rated Texas in the opener
on Ron Tate's two-out home run in the last of
the ninth with one mate aboard. The 'M' nine then
rode through Holy Cross and Florida before drop-
ping their first decision in a rematch with Texas.
Reliefer Jim Bobel broke up the fifteen-inning
title game with a run scoring single to beat Santa
Clara and Bob Garibaldi, the nation's top college
hurler, 5 to 4.
In Hawaii Michigan moundsman Fritz Fisher
pitched a three-hitter in the final game to help his
teammates toward a 3 to 1 victory and the first
world collegiate championship.
The players pictured on this page and Harvey
Chapman, who is starting in today's game at left
halfback, were the mainstays of Michigan's suc-
cessful baseball team of last season.
NEBRASKA BACKFIELD-These four backs are expected to give
Michigan plenty of trouble today. They are quarterback Dennis
Claridge (upper left), halfbacks Willie Ross (upper right) and
Dennis Stuewe (lower right), and fullback Warren Power

.Michigan's version of three-platoon football-the newest thing
in college gridir-on wars these days--goes on public display for the
first time today against a vastly improved Nebraska team. Kickoff
time is 1:30 p.m.
The Wolverines have been installed as one to two touchdown
choices to open their season successfully before a Band Day crowd
expected to reach 75,00.
The three platoon system, first popularized by Paul Dietzel at
Louisiana State several years ago, was adopted by Michigan Coach
Bump Elliott after he lost practically his entire starting team of last
year in hopes of making the most of his -young sophomores. Fifteen
of them have won spots on the three alternate units that Elliott plans
to use.
Nevertheless, an almost all-letterman first team powered by two
year veterans Dave Glinka an~d Dave Raimey appears to hold the key
to Michigan success.
Raimey, who has led Michigan in scoring for each of the past
two seasons and has been hailed in some circles this fall as an All-
American, runs out of the right halfback slot in Michigan's wing-T
offense.
At Nebraska, Coach Bob Devaney, who moved over from Wyoming,
was greated by 24 returning lettermen from a squad which compiled
a 3-6-1 record last fall.
They didn't disappoint him last week in the Husker opener
against South Dakota, romping away 53-0.
