Last year it seemed as if half
the team were hobbled at the knee.
Evashevski and guard John Mar-
cum were lost before the season
started; guard Lou Pavloffswent
out after the first game, a win
over UCLA; halfback Jack Strobel
and center Todd Grant (graduat-

ed) bit the dust in the Iowa game;
and quarterback Bob Chandler and
center John Walker (graduated)
were still hampered from opera-
tions the year before.
"I don't know what the answer
is," commented Elliott. "We're
trying calesthenics and everything
we can think of.'I'm sure other
schools have had similar prob-
lems, but I just hope we can stay
healthy."
And staying healthy this year
will be especially important, es-
pecially in the line, where the
supply of heavy, muscle-bound
blockers and tacklers is rather
thin.

GRID SELECTION'S
Can you outsmart the experts? Do you have the inside dope on
the Nebraska game? Once again The Daily has the dubious honor of
running its annual grid picks. For those of you who don't know, it's
easy and lots of fun. Just stop in at The Michigan Daily for your of-
ficial entry blank, then bring or mail it to The Daily at 420 Maynard
St. before midnight Friday. The prize is two free tickets to see "The
Miracle Worker," now playing at the Michigan Theatre. The tickets
will go to the person with the most picks correct; and, in case of ties,
the tickets go to the most nearly correct pick of the score for the
Michigan-Nebraska game. So come one and all-let's have your grid
picks for the week. Maybe you'll be the lucky one.

BACK IN '63:
Renewed Contracts
For Sten gel, Lopez

By The Associated Press
Grizzly, old Casey Stengel and
soft-spoken Al Lopez, familiar fig-
ures on the baseball scene for
many years, signed contracts yes-
terday to manage their respective
clubs again in 1963.
Stengel, 72, agreed in New York
to return as skipper of the defeat-
ridden New York Mets, who made
their debut in the National League
only this season.

Lopez, 54, signed an unprece-
dented two-year contract in Chi-
cago to guide the fortunes of the
White Sox through the 1964 cam-
paign. He is finishing his sixth
season with the White Sox.
Salary terms were not disclosed
in either case.
The announcement of Stengel's
return came from club president
George Weiss.

Patterson Underdog
In Title Bout Tonight

IT

SHE'LL
YOU 11

c

By The Associated Press

CHICAGO - Champion FloydJ
Patterson was a 6-5 underdog to-J
day as he made final preparations
to defend his title against Sonny
Liston at Comiskey Park.
The battle, one of the most1
talked about chamiponship bouts
in many a year, is to determine,
at least temporarily, whether orE
not speed and savvy can with-
stand the overpowering size and
strength of the challenger.
Carried on Radio, TV
The scheduled 15-rounder starts
at 9:30 (EST). Television will be
on closed circuit only, and only
outside the Chicago area. AGC
radio will carry the fight across
the nation and around the world.
Paid attendance at the arena and
in the theatres will bring in over
$5 million.
Liston found a fit of Everlast
boxing gloves yesterday, and will
wear them as he attempts to pry
the championship from Patterson.
Hassle Avoided
The defending champ will wear
the same make, thus avoiding
what could have been a hassle.
Liston's camp had been holding
out for Frager gloves, but accepted
the Everlast model after trying on
just one set before the Illinois
State Athletic Commission staff at
his Aurora Downs training camp.
A feud over the type of glove

Liston would wear had been raging
for a week. until it was settled yes-
terday.
The eight-ounce gloves accepted
are pad'ded with hair, whereas
the Frager glove has foam rubber
padding.
The 27-year-old champion is
expected to receive a $1.7-million
purse, largest in history.
