'$2.50 T.o Preview, OpeningPlay At the invitation of University President Harlan Hatcher, a spe- cial formal preview of "The School for Scandal," the opening play of the new Fall Drama Festival, will be held Oct. 2 in the Lydia Men- delssohn Theatre. The preview will serve to intro- duce the Professional Theatre Pro- gram's new residence company, the Association of Producing Artists, to an invited audience prominent in local, state and national cultur- al, civic and political fields. Following the performance, President Hatcher will give a re- ception in honor of the APA com- pany in the Michigan League Ballroom. "We believe this is an import- ant step in our participation in the renaissance of national profes- sional theatre," President Hatcher said in the invitation. Richard Sheridan's "The School for Scandal," an 18th century comedy of manners, will make its official bow to the public Oct. 3. Ellis Rabb; founder and artistic director of the APA, will stage the play and assume a leading role. State Council Set To Attack Delinquency LANSING -- The Michigan Crime and Delinquency Council said yesterday that a new attack on juvenile delinquency will be tested in three Michigan public school systems this year. The project has the endorse- ment of Lynn M. Bartlett, State Superintendent of Public Ihstruc- tion. His department will promote statewide use of the booklet next year if the test is successful. The program will test a widely hailed student booklet, "You and the Law," in an attem t to ac- quaint teenagers with e legal process and results of law viola- tions. The three schools participating in the program are Okemos Junior High School, Ypsilanti East Jun- ior High and Gaylord Consolidated Schools. The booklet, and an accompany- ing classroom program, is designed to tell teenagers in simple terms what the law is and how it oper- ates by using specific examples of law violations. orary educational sorority, on the topic of "Education for Freedom," Prof. Lofgren reported seeing many children whose adjustment to their surrounding situation was excellent, but who had no inner educational goals. "This lack of internalized goals may be one reason why we in America can turn out remarkable technicians, but very few theor- ists," Prof. Lofgren commented. Pleasing the Teachers "Too often the individual is only doing what pleases his teach- ers, parents and community. "But science is really a form of the arts and must be accompanied by the same internal direction as painting or playing the piano," she said, Prof. Lofgren feels that the nat- ural curiosity of children is often stifled, leaving none when they grow up. Teachers may attempt to force a time limit on creative activities by stopping the children before they are through and thus killing their incentive. "Good Students" This may produce children who are "good students" in the sense that they are aware of what pleases the teacher, yet they are not really interested in their stu- dies for their own sake. The luncheon program, which was held at the Michigan League, was the 40th anniversary celebra- tion of Xi chapter of the educa- tion honorary. Notes Change In Judgment Of Teachers WHEATON, Ill. (P )-An educat- or said recently teachers now are rated by degrees rather than in- tellect and character. E. Merrill Root, retired Earham (Ind.) College professor, made the statement in a speech. His appear- ance was in connection with the opening of new national head- quarters of the Church League of America. "All over America today," he said, "teachers are rated not by their character, their intellect, their genius, but by the courses they have taken in education, by degrees from teachers colleges that they have." Root said that, in the past in this country, education was aimed at "nobility of spirit" as well as brilliance of mind. He added: "We need again the great edu- cation that will make a man more than a mere man because he serves something beyond man, that is God." The league's executive secretary is Edgar C. Bundy, who has been active for years on the conserva- tive side of politics. He described the league as an organization of laymen who seek to educate church people on the strategy of Communism and how they can combat it. The league headquarters, a $250,000 colonial style building in Wheaton, will be dedicated for- mally Sunday. See GEORGE ROMNEY on TV tonight. 8-8:30, Channel 9 and Tuesday, 8-8:30 on Channels 2 or 6.
