TEN THE MICHIGAN DAILY FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14,1962 TEN THE MICHIGAN DAILY FRIDAY. SEPTEMBI~R 14 1Q~ s vnw.a. ...a+w aava:+av a a.7vN MRA Headquarters on Island Hideaway 1f By MICHAEL HARRAH City Editor Special To The Daily MACKINAC ISLAND - To your right after the boat docks, a black- topped winding little street wan- ders off around one of the world's most famous islands. Here the north woods beauty is a tradition. No motor vehicles are allowed on the island. Horses and bicycles do the job. There is a rustic air about the whole place, from its world f a- mous Grand Hotel to the smallest cobblestone in the narrowest side street. Headquarters This is the setting which one of the world's most unique organiza- tions has selected for its perman- ent headquarters. This Island of Mackinac, at the junction between Lakes Huron and Michigan, is the home of Moral Re-Armament. MRA, of course, is the organiza- tion which hopes to better the world as a place to live by chang- ing human nature, and most of its operation is directed from here. And although its founder, Frank N. D. Buchanan, died last year, the organization is far from moribund. Expand Programs The group has headquartered at Mackinac since 1942, but that fact hadn't attained much notice until just recently, when its great con- struction and building program got underway. Starting in 1942 with a borrowed building, MRA now possesses 15 buildings, covering some 20 acres, making Mackinac Island the ma- jor training center for the group which considers itself the only ef- fective force against the spread of world Communism. (Other MRA centers are located at Caux, Switzerland, at the very peak of a mountain in the Alps, and at Tokyo.) Plush Facilities Attracting devotees from all over ,the world, the Mackinac hideaway includes living and din- ing quarters, a television and movie studio, where MRA pro- duces its own material. Morality plays and propaganda are admittedly its media for the masses in its attempt to bring about complete "morality" in all governments. Communism is its current foe, and leaders hope to reform Pei- "ping and Moscow without taking up arms. MRA'ers claim that the coming years will be their most crucial because of this goal. Nebulous Group To classify them would be diffi- cult. Theirs is a religion without ritual, a credo with feeling, a po- litical weapon without sin. They originate their morality within themselves and they hope that "it will be catching"-so that they may reform those about them by osmosis, so to speak. MRA'ers work at their tasks with great zeal, and they claim they will be successful only be- cause they are devoid of political aspirations. Many Backers On the Island, their opponents are many, but their friends are just as numerous.
