TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1962 TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1962 1 OPEN SEASON: Pittsburgh, Miami On TV Tomorrow I TV Rosters UNIVERSITY OF l[AMI 1 3 7 Y f . . I I 1 (Our Specialty) By MIKE BLOCK Although Michigan's football season doesn't begin until Sept. 29, you won't have to wait 'til then to see some top-notch college grid ac- tion. Tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. (EST) you can, with the aid of a tele- vision set, witness the Pittsburgh- Miami (Fla) game from Pittsburgh on WJBK, Detroit (Channel 2). Traditionally powerful independ- ents in their respective sections of the country, these two will be more than anxious to get the season rolling with a victory. Watch Mira The man everyone will be watching is junior quarterback George Mira of the Hurricanes. Rated by many as the top passer in the nation, Mira racked up over 1,000 yards in the air in his first year in intercollegiate action. Even though the Panthers won last year's battle 10-7, Mira, in his first varsity outing, ran wild. He was finally stopped, not by Pittsburgh, but by the torrential downpour which turned the field to mud in the second half. A big question to be answered in this game is whether or not Pittsburgh, or any- one else, has learned enough about the strong points and the flaws in Mira's play to contain him cessfully. suc-I I ULR1CH Ann Arbor's Friendly Bookstore Probably the greatest problem facing Mira and Miami is the end position. In 1961, the ace quarter- back had All-American Bill Miller,. in the right place at the right time. Now. with Miller departed, head coach Andy Gustafson is try- ing to come up with some ade- quate, if not spectacular, replace- ments. No Relation The city of Miami may be in Florida, but any relationship its football team may have to that state is purely coincidental. As a, matter of fact, it will be old home week in Pittsburgh's stadium when; the Hurricanes arrive. A total of 26 players on the Miami team hail from the state of Pennsylvania,a including six probable starters. And of these-you guessed it-; four are from Pittsburgh: center Bob Dentel, guard Jim o'Mahony, tackle Joe Smerdel, and end Jim Simon. This reunion notwithstanding, the Panthers' main aim is to im- prove on last year's 3-7 mark. While Miami s forte is an aerial game, Pittsburgh must rely mainly on a land attack. Its best ball- carriers are Rick Leeson, fullback, and Paul Martha, whose speedy running from halfback proved to be Miami's undoing last year. Big Line As usual, the Panthers have a strong, heavy line to protect their backfield men Returning from last year are tackles Gary Xaltenbach and Ed Adamchik and guard Tom Brown, all of whom weigh in the neighborhood of 230 pounds apiece.. Brown and 218-lb. Ray Popp are what coach John Michelosen terms exceptional linebackers on de- fense. But if the defensive line and linebacking are above par, the backfield is not. Last year's de- fensive secondary resembled a sieve, and if Mira is to be con- tained, the improvement must be made in precisely that area. Otherwise, only another mon- soon will help Pittsburgh.
