THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1964 THE MICHIGAN DAILY rit--r Rwvvv I THE MICHIGAN DAILY A f~' t~' YAIa' E ;SEVEN vI Myers Seeks to Avenge '63 Dumping By LLOYD GRAFF "I was considering coming to Michigan until I heard that they got Bob Timberlake. I wanted to steer clear of anywhere he went." These are the words of Tom Myers, Northwestern's highly ac- claimed senior quarterback who will lead the Wildcats this Satur- day against the Wolverines. Myers was a high school star in Troy, Ohio, a football-mad town in the central part of the state. Troy is only 75 miles from Frank lin, Ohio where Timberlake de- velopedasra prep football player. Each quarterback knew of the other by reputation, but they never played against each other. Frazier, in a local hospital re- ceiving treatment for the injury, said he broke it in the second round of the semifinal. Frazier, a Philadelphia slaught- erhouse worker, gained a 3-2 de- cision over Hans Huber in last Friday's final. Frazier didn't favor the hand in the bout, however, as reports of the fight said. He re- sorted to numerous left hooks throughout. Broken on Russian "It happened when I hit the Russian in the second round of the semifinal," Frazier said from his hospital bed. He won the semi- final by knocking out Vadim Yemelyanov in the second round. Frazier was asked why he fought another bout, knowing his hand1 was broken. "Well, I didn't know the hand was that bad at first," he said. "I couldn't get a grip like; I wanted to, so I started to soak it. "It began to feel a little better and I felt I could make it through one more fight. "Besides I'd gone all that way. I couldn't let one hand pull me back." No X-Rays Frazier said he went to a team doctor and spoke about the sore- ness, but then insisted he was not hurt badly when the doctor sug- gested X-rays. "He didn't know how bad the hand was," said Frazier. Asked how it felt in the final I bout, he said, "I began to feel it every once in a while. I was throw- ing a lot of lefts but he wouldn't stand up," he said meaning he didn't connect solidly with many of them. Ironically, Frazier made the Olympic team as a substitute for Buster Mathes, who broke a hand while sparring with Frazier. Frazier said he has not yet de- cided if he will fight professionally. scended on them like students to a "gut" course. Jack Fouts, then a Michigan offensive line coach, tried to recruit Myers and even' brought him to Ann Arbor to visit. But in the end he decided upon Northwestern "partly be- cause being close to Chicago would be an advantage in pursuing a business education and career," and also because Timberlake would have been plenty of competition for the quarterback spot. Myers returned to Ann Arbor last year, but the Wolverines were certainly not as cordialhas when they tried to recruit him. The Wolverines humbled the Wildcats 27-6 and harassed Mr. Myers con- tinually, smearing him for a net rushing loss of 44 yards. "Last year's Michigan game is one of the worst ones I've ever been in," says Myers recalling the contest. He's hoping to avenge the defeat Saturday. Loves To Pass Myers loves to throw the ball and his coach Alex Agase loves him to also. He holds 13 North- western passing records, eclipsing everything that Otto Graham ever did in Evanston. In his first var- sity game he completed fifteen consecutive passes in perhaps the greatest debut of any quarterback in Big Ten history. That was the year when Tom Myers to Paul Flatley was the most feared pass- ing combination in the nation. But Flatley is long gone and Myers must now throw to an assortment of inexperienced ends. This accounts in part for Myers' relatively low pass completion ra- tio of 54 of 127 this year. In his first two seasons he had an aver- age of 55 per cent. No Special Receiver "I have no one special receiver this year. Dick Smith and Mike Donaldson are good young foot- ball players. Caz Banaczek is a very fine tight end," says Myers. He has hit Banaczek 21 times so far this season. Myers admits that he is dis- appointed with his performance so far and with Northwestern's play as a team. "But we all still think we are capable of beating any team on a given day We haven't quit, and we aren't going to." "I guess I'm something like Staubach this year. Neither of us is performing to his ability yet. Maybe this Saturday I'll begin to."
