It was only a matter of minutes before State made the most of the breal-a key pass from quar- terback Steve Juday to quarter- back-playing-flanker Dave McCor- mick set the ball at the-four, and Juday followed two plays later with a sneak from the one for the touchdown. Halfback Jim Detwiler fumbled the kickoff after State's first touchdown, but Ward recovered. Then on the first play Ward fum- Cormick engineered a drive that was only halted at the Wolverine nine yard line. It was two strikes and you're out for Kenney, and on fourth and five MSU Coach Duffy Daugherty sent in sopho- more Larry Lukasik to boot the field goal that gave the Spartans a 10-3 lead. The Wolverines held MSU's oleading ground - gainer Clinton Jones to a minus two yards rush- ing and allowed the Spartans only four completions in 12 pass tries. Timberlake hit home on nine of -Daily-Jim Lines BOB TIMBERLAKE CRASHES through the Michigan State line making a key gain to pick up a first down on an important fourth-down play. Timberlake carried on 17 plays and passed for 122 yards in the Wolverines' victory. Three In A Row, Six To Go (Continued from Page 1) Sygar, who played for Mason at Niles (O.) McKinley High School, is playing his first season for the Wolverines after sitting out last year with a broken leg. He missed spring practice when he rebroke the leg in the same place in a freak accident. But he had regained enough form by the first game of the season to be a regular in the defensive backfield. Sygar had been counted on as a start- ing offensive halfback a year ago before his injury. * * * Fumbles played a key part in yesterday's g am e as S ta t e gave away the ball twice and Michigan lost the ball three times out of four bobbles. The first Wolverine mistake was the most costly as fullback Mel Anthony fumbled Timberlake's pitchout on the second play of the game. Guard Ed Macuga recovered for the Spartans on the'Wolverine 17-yard line. Five plays later Michigan State was in the. lead, Drives to 18 Michigan took the kickoff and drove to the 18-yard line of Mich- igan State when halfback Jim Detwiler fumbled and the Spar- tans took over. Seven plays later State had moved to the Michigan 15-yard line and tackle Bill Yearby stopped that scoring attempt by recovering quarterback Steve Ju- day's fumble. Before the quarter was over, linebacker Barry Dehlin red- dogged through the Spartan line, hit sophomore halfback Clinton Jones; and recovered Jones' fumble. Detwiler fumbled again in the second quarter but recovered it himself for a seven-yard loss. Sophomore halfback Carl Ward fumbled the second half kickoff and it was recovered by defensive halfback Lou Bobich on the Michi- gan 18-yard line. The Wolverine defensive platoon held the Spar tans and barefooted kicker Dick Kenney missed a field goal at- tempt from the 21-yard line. Several Fumbles Elliott said he thought many of the fumbles were a result of "pull- ing away from the ball instead of coming to it." He also admitted that some of the players, especial- ly sophomores, were "a little tight." Michigan's quarterback option play was working well at times but there was a definite problem of r RICK SYGAR JOHN HENDERSON MSU MICH. Timberlake passed 29 yards to Smith for a first down, but after the Wolverine drive moved the ball to the Michigan State 18, Detwiler fumbled again and the ever-wary Spartans jumped on the ball. Big Man. f State showed off its new spec- tacular pass-catching end Gene Washington, a glue-fingered soph- omore, on the next series as Wash- ington outstretched Rindfuss on a 43-yard pass play that sent the Spartans deep to the Michigan 15. s The fumbles weren't all Wolver- ine, though, as Juday-hit hard by red-dogging linebacker Tom Cec- chini, fumbled on the next play and Yearby recovered for Mich- igan. The Wolverines got their first big chance to get some points on the scoreboard in the middle of the second quarter when a 16- yard dash around right end by Anthony and a pass interference call pushed the Wolverines to the MSU 14 and a first down. When three plays fizzled, Timberlake's 22-yard field goal attempt went wide to the right. Go for Three Returning to Spartan territory just before the half, Timberlake's pass for Ward went incomplete, but a second pass interference call gave Michigan the ball at State's 35. The veteran quarterback again went to the air lanes, and with just seconds to go before the in- termission hit Henderson, stepping out of bounds at the 13. Timberlake then swung his foot throungh a 29-yard field goal and three points on the last play of the half. The intermission wasn't rest enough-on the kickoff Ward lost the ball on a hard tackle and once again the Spartans recovered, gaining possession'' at the Michi- gan 18. This time the Wolverine de- fense held, and on fourth down from the 14 State's barefoot field goal kicker Dick Kenney misfired on the first of two attempts. The second one came half a period later when the Hawaiian import's /boot went wide to the left on a kick from the 34. Once Again State knocked on the Michigan end zone door at the beginning of the fourth period when Mc- 18 attempts through the air, while Anthony was Michigan's big man on the ground with 70 yards in 21 carries. Yearby suffered a slight bump on the head, but Michigan es- caped the vctory without any ser- ious injuries. In the other camp, the Michigan State physician rem ported that end Doug Roberts will. be out for two weeks with an in- jured right knee, Macuga will prob- ably miss the Indiana game with a left knee injury, and there were assorted marks of the battle - bumps, bruises, and cuts. Big Factor Daugherty pointed to the in- juries as a' big factor in the last minutes o fthe game. "The hitting was hard out there and we got banged up quite a bit." Duffy added that "I felt our boys played real hard all the way- it was that passing late in the game that really hurt." Elliott said that it "just feels real good" to beat Duffy. 10 153 Michigan State No. Yds. 1 43 3 41 4 84 PUNTING Michigan No. Yds. 6 193 Vichigan State No. Yds. 5 201 Avg. 43.0 13.6 21.0 Avg. 32.1 Avg. 40.2 Anthony Timberlak Ward Sygar Fisher Detwiler- Totals Amnon McCormic] Gordon Grogan Cotton C.
