Nites SAM'S STORE 122 E. Washington 0 v FROM THE NOR THSIDE - PRESS This un-syndicated column re- , flects one aspect of the concern for current social and religious issues that is felt at Northside Presbyterian C h u r c h, which meets in the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity Building, 2250 Fuller Road, Ann Arbor. Another aspect of that concern may be observed in regular discussions of those' issues following the 10:45 a.m. Worship service of North side Pres, to which the public is invited. Very few white Christians, it seems to me, realize the extent of the injustice to which' Ne- groes (and other dark-skinned' people) are and have been sub- jected in this country. When someone cruelly suggests that hard work and cleaner habits would remove the causes of their difficulties,-he apparently prefers to ignore the fact that undesirable conditions seen among Negroes are largely the result of a perverse cycle in which the Negro is caught, and which the white Christian helps to perpetuate. The Negro's wheel of misfortune turns like this: Negroes cannot get good jobs because they lack educational qualifications: Negroes cannot get a decent education because they can- not live in the communities where good educational fa- cilities are available; Negroes cannot live in such communities because-with low-paying jobs-they can- not afford the types of houses that those communities re- quire; outright color discrimination by whites at every stage of the cycle efficiently seals any leaks in the system, Is it any wonder that Negro communities look depressed? Are we surprised when Negroes rebel against constituted au- thority-especially when every aspect of that authority seems to be designed to favor only whites?, The shocking thing is that white Christians often choose to "protect" their exaggerated property values, their discrim- inatory educational systems.
