Diving Coach Dick Kimball is
going to New York this morning
for the Olympic swimming and
diving trials after being named,
last Saturday the coach of the
United States men's diving team
for the Tokyo Olympic Games this
October.
Kimball was selected for the
post by the U.S. Olympic Com-
mittee after the coach originally
selected resigned. Harry Chapman
of the University of Texas gave up
the post last month after suffer-
ing a heart attack.
The trials are over on Sept. 6
and Kimball will take his team
to the U.S. Air Force Academy
for training a few days later.
Kimball and the divers will meet
Indiana Coach Jim (Doc) Coun-
cilman and the U.S. swimming
team in California before going
as one group to Tokyo.
Coached in Olympics
Kimball's appointment makes.
him the second Wolverine coach
to head an Olympic squad in the
last four years. Coach Gus Stager
coached the men's swimming team
at Rome in 1960.
Although the individual mem-
bers of the diving team have not

yet been selected, Kimball says,
"I'll probably know every diver
who makes the team. I know the
divers from Indiana and Ohio
State and the others who have a
chance to make the team. I
coached Bob Webster here for
two years and he is perhaps the
best bet to make the team in
tower diving."I
Thisdwill be Kimball's third'
trip to Japan. In 1958 he was on
a tour of U.S. military bases in
the Far East performing a diving
act and one part of the tour in-'
cluded Japan. In 1960 he stopped
in Japan again on a tour of the
world sponsored by the State De-
partment.
Return in November
Kimball's wife will join him in
Tokyo for the start of the Games.
They plan to stay in Japan for a
while after the conclusion of the
Games before returning home in
November.
Kimball is not worried about his
Wolverine diving team becoming
stale or not improving during his
absence. "We don't start pushing
the divers until November any-
way," he explained. "And some of
the older divers can help out the
younger ones while I'm gone."

Ex-Wolverine heavyweight grap-
pler Jack Barden won a spot on
the 1964 United States' Olympic
wrestling squad last weekend in
the Greco-Roman event.
Barden, whose bid for a free-
style seating went awry last week,
drew with Pat Lovell of the San
Francisco Olympic Club in the
final match of the Greco-Roman
wrestling event to capture the
title in the 213.5 pound class.
Barden wrestled at Michigan

" seasons. In 1963 he capped his
* Wolverine wrestling career by
pinning down the NCAA title. He
has been active in top wrestling
meets since then.
Barden got his big break in the
Greco-Roman division when he
iwon a close decision from Russ
Winer of Durand, Michigan.
Greco-Roman wrestling differs
from freestyle in that it is con-
fined to higs above the hips.
Barden is the lone Wolverine
wrestler to try for an Olympic
spot. American wrestling ,teams
have traditionally been drawn
from the wrestling powers of Okla-
homa and Oklahoma State. The
Greco-Roman event is expected to
be dominated by the Bulgarian
and Russian teams.

Seven Meets
For Harriers
Cross Country will, once again,
be on a play-when-you-wanta bas-
is this fall.
Assistant track coach Dave Mar-
tin, who manages the distance
runners, has planned a seven meet
schedule for this fall; but he is
already hedging on it. Martin feels
that the harriers are so far out
of shape now that they won't be
ready to compete in their first
scheduled meet, the Calvin Col-
lege Open Sept. 7.
"We don't have any Murrays
this year," he says. Chris Murray,
Michigan's graduated Big Ten out-
door two-mile champ, came to
school last fall in the same shape
that he was in seven months later
when he won his crown.
Other meets on the tentative
cross country schedule are Bowl-
ing Green University at Ann Ar-
bor in a practice meet Sept. 19,
Michigan Federation Open Meet
at Kalamazoo Sept. 26, Spring Ar-
bor Invitational at Spring Arbor
Oct. 17, Spring Arbor at Ann Ar-
bor Oct. 24, Michigan Federation
Championships at Kalamazoo Nov.
7 and finally the Big Ten Cham-
pionships at Champaign Nov. 9.
If Michigan competes in the Big
Ten Meet it will probably be on an
individual basis instead of as a
team.
