Squoosh sploosh squoosh sploosh, squoosh squoosh ..-. Go . . . go .. go .. go . go. - - It's Ferry Field. It's cold and it's wet. It's a typical day of spring3 football practice at Michigan. The Wolverine tonnage pours, out of Yost Field House, running in groups and clusters of blue, gold, white, green, and red. They'll be practicing on the old, the orig-. inal, Ferry Field. That's the one in the middle of the varsity track. They might have been playing on their regular wide open range next to the baseball field, but even Michigan's coaching staff can't get a lineman to walk on water. They may throw a ball around for a little while or make some contact, loosening up a little on their own. 1 tom Cecchini gets them to- gether for those calesthenics with the little known names "One two three four. One two three four." "Go Blue!" somebody yells as they run in place. "Go home," answers another pretending to talk to himself. And they laugh some. The spirit is there by the gallon . . . along with a light drizzle. They split up again. Everyone is in motion now. Tony Mason and Denny Fitz- gerald work with some offensive linemen on one end of the field. They've got to clear paths for runners and protect quarterbacks, so they don't tackle, they "just" hit the dummies and the sleds. They just hit them and pound them and growl at them and swear at them and just about tear them to shreds as a mortal enemy. And they push them up and down the field. Mason hits the linemen. Of course he's just pointing out technique, but he wants steady action. And the drills are there so he can watch them and listen to that pop of shoulder pads in contact. On the other side of the field Hank Fonde has a part of the squad running off some pass plays set for the backfield. Elliott named Dick Vidmer and Wally Gabler to handle the quar- terbacking for the Blue squad. Jim Detwiler and Mike Bass, who appears have beat out freshman Ernie Sharpe for a starting role, will be at the halfback slots. Carl Ward is still out for track where he'll be running the 100. But it is probable that Sharpe, an important prospect, will see plenty of action on Saturday. Dave Fisher will be running- and, hopefully, blocking-from the fullback position. Steve Smith and Craig Kirby will start at the tight and split end positions re- spectively. The light drizzle has stopped by now. Elliott listens to Tom Mack explaining about the fire at SAE Wednesday night as they walk back to Yost Field House. Ten football players are members of the fraternity. go.. Ryan Gets Coaching Jfob Michigan's Bob Eckert won the Intercollegiate. Division of the Tour of Ann Arbor Bicycle Race held Sunday in Barton Hills. The race, which was run over a 25 mile course, consisted of a col- legiate and an open division. Fifty-one riders started the race, but the group was quickly broken up by the fast pace and tough hills on each lap of the 1.8 mile course. Even though Eckert was com- peting only against the collegians teihnically, he managed to stay with the 10 leaders through 22 of the 25 miles when he crashed with two laps remaining. He re- mounted, however, and finished well ahead of the second place col- lege rider, Dean Patterson, from Winona State College, Minnea- polis. Elliott calls a huddle of the entire squad in the middle of the field. It's the last real practice be- fore Saturday's scrimmage. Elliott makes it clear that the important spring season finale will be Just like the real thing. That includes field goals, extra points, etc. The game will match the first offensive and defensive teams against "everyone else." But "everyone else" could turn out to be fewer people than are on the first two teams. 122 E. Families stayed together ...and sometimes prayed together. In those days a couch was used for sleeping alone or with a good friend or with your wife, who wasn't always a good friend (or wasn't always your wife)."
