Controversy Rages

4-0557
Saturday

To the Editor:
THE MAINSTREAM of Univer-
sity life had long seemed a
'weep-laughable world of impreg
nable Dexter, Michigan values-
aseptic quiz-grubbers, don't rock-
the-boat professors, troglodytic
bomb-the-banners, and a Univer-
sity president with a chinky-
chinky-chinaman vision of South-
east Asia.
Wednesday night I saw there is
real intellectual leadership here
and I saw its terrible beauty and
power. And suddenly I felt proud,
proud and at one with this Uni-
versity.
-John Holm, '65
To the Editor:
WE REGRET that, through our
oversight, we were not includ-
ed in the list of those faculty and
staff members who supported the
teach-in protest against American
policy in Viet Nam.
-Peter Schneider
Medical School-
Gerontology division
Jane Schneider
Political Science department
To the Editor:
SEVERAL VALID arguments
have been advanced in favor of
U.S. withdrawal from Viet Nam,
but there is one prevalent argu-
ment which I consider indefens-
ible: that the U.S. has no right to
interfere with Vietnamese affairs.
In fighting in Viet Nam, we are
attempting to progress politically
by promoting world peace. Viet
Nam understandably is opposed
to this progress-she would prefer
communistic aggression to U.S.
military intervention.-
But progress should never be
subordinate to the self-interest of
its "victims." If we had listened
to the victims of technological
progress, we would not have the
telephone or mass production, and
if we had upheld the rights of 'the
victims of the Civil rights move-
ment, the movement would lack
much of the momentum it has
now.
Similarly, to make any progress
toward eliminating the most odious
aggression since Hitler, we must
ignore the rights of the Viet-
namese.
-Ronald Evans, '67'
f To the Editor:
I WOULD LIKE to .react to
Phyllis Koch's editorial in the
' March 24 Daily: The U.S. Needs
Firm Policies (in Viet Nam).
It appears the only way to jus-
tify United States policy in Viet
Nam is to resurrect the Monroe
doctrine and expand it to cover
not just the Western hemisphere
but the whole globe. This, it seems
to me, is what Miss Koch has
done'.
If we grant the U.S. is wise and
strong enough to control and di-
rect all major political events in
the world, everything else in Miss
Koch's argument follows. We then
should ignore the peculiar aims
'and wishes which other peoples
or regions or continents have in
mind for ,themselves, convinced
as we are that we understand
fully and are capable of executing
completely what's good for peoples
thousands of miles from our own
shores.
We can then talk about South
Viet Nam being another Czecho-
slovakia, as Miss Koch does, with-
'ot being concerned about the
absolute legality of our own pres-
ence there. We can blandly state'
'we are down there because the
Viet Cong is there, without in-
dulging in a bit of introspection
land wondering whether this is
perhaps not a spiraling process
whereby actions of one protagonist
cause similar actions on the part
of the other, and so on, ad in-

ifinitum.
Finally, it then becomes emi-
nently reasonable to assume the
U.S. should handle the Viet Nam
case, and the existence of the UN
or other machinery can be dis-
regarded entirely (as Anglo-French
interests tried to disregard it, un-
successfully, during the Suez
Crisis. Unsuccessfully, by the way,
because President Eisenhower sug-
gested to them it was against the.
Charter of the UN to do so).
LET US now drop the Monroe
doctrine aplied to the whole world
and see what the world might
really look like. Now the protest
against current U.S. action in Viet
Nam is colored by a whole series
of questions which become rele-
vant. Can we be sure the present
stepped-up U.S. involvement in
,the fight is not in fact a result
of a recognition that the attempts
to help the South Vietnamese win
,the war for themselves have fail-
ed? Are we, in other words, in-
volved now in a power conflict
,between the U.S. and Asian Com-
munist powers (i.e. Communist
China) and "Never mind Viet Nam
and the specific needs of the
people in that area of the world"?

ships or once some semblance of
"order" has been restored? Does
the U.S. seriously believe it has
the power and the insight on its
own to muster any program good
for the Vietnamese? Do we in this
country really understand Asians,
their needs, etc., that well? Can we
really so surmount our own pe-
culiar interests that we feel we
can go to Viet Nam as sole arbi-
ters of a cause?
THE ONLY ANSWER, unless the
U.S. is seriously willing to com-
promise its values-and against
this possibility we are protesting
-is to abandon unilateral political
action in this area and put the
same energy and money we have
spent trying to handle a situation
by ourselves into UN machinery
designed to resolve problems in
this area (such as the Mekong
Delta Project).

To the Editor:
A COLLEGE CAMPUS is the
wrong place for teachers to
present biased views, whether poli-
tics, military strategy or inter-
pretations of history. Although
controversies certainly are proper
subjects for campus discussions,
faculty members occupy the high-
est position of trust to assure
students are offered both sides of
every controversy in equal quality
and quantity.
Teachers should scrupulously
avoid using captive audiences to
convey their personal opinions
without free and open debate. Let
faculties protest in Washington,
D.C., like other citizens, but not
on campuses, unless they make a
good faith effort to present both
sides.
-Douglas M. Cain, '66L
To the Editor:
THE FOLLOWING letter was
sent to the Detroit News in
response to comment in that paper
on last wek's teach-in:
Your paper has done what it
can to portray the University
teach-in and protest of American
policy in Viet Nam as somehow at
fault because we did not invite
a speaker who would defend the
administration point of view. In
editorial, cartoon and even your
news columns, you have charged
us with this "sin" of omission.
I really fail to see what the fuss
is about. Personally, I would not
have objected to presentation of
the administration point of view.
But there were considerations
which compelled our group to the
opposite position.
SPECIFICALLY, there were
three reasons for not inviting such
a speaker: First, we were protest-
in g the administration position,
and were accordingly focussing
on alternatives to it. There is
much disagreement about the ap-
propriate alternatives within our
group-plenty to talk about.
Second, the administration po-
sition has had and continues to
have an ample forum and sympa-
thetic audience. Opposition to it
has increasingly been pressured,
villified and distorted.
Third, we did reproduce and dis-
tribute 3000 copies of the official
administration position-the State
Department's White Paper on Viet
Nam.
Now these considerations may
not seem to many like sufficient
justification for failing to invite
a pro - administration speaker,
Some apparently even believe
every significant position has, as
a matter of principle, a right to be
heard every time one engages in
& political demonstration designed
to promote protest and debate.
.On this basis, we should also be
blamed for not having had a
spokesman for the officialSoviet

or Communist Chinese point of
view. Or do those who criticize us
in their way make the implicit as-
sumption that anyone who critici-
zes the administration point of
view must be pro-Communist?
Of you and your readers I ask,
only that if ybu cannot agree
with us, at least try to be fair
to us.
-Prof. Arnold Kaufman
Philosophy department
To the Editor:
WONDER if those who chanted
and carried the signs proclaim-
ing "Better Dead than Red" last
Wednesday night at' the rally on
the Diag have considered that the
choice they were professing may
not be entirely a personal one.
It is one thing for a man to
choose for himself, in the sense
that "I would rather be dead than
Red." But the slogan might also
implicitly be asserting, "I would
rather a Vietnamese child be dead,
than grow up to be a Reds"
The significance of asserting
this seems quite different from the
significance of asserting one is
personally willing to die rather
