PAGE SIX THE MICHIGAN DAILY SUNDAY, 21 MARCH 1965 ESSENTIALS: 47 Deodorants Come Rolling in Strong \-x.. w By ROGER RAPOPORT During a recent shopping trip I noticed two boys in the deodorant Ssection of a department store, de- taching the lids of the various products and systematically roll- ing their fingers over the roll-ons,- sniffing the aerosol sprays and testing the consistency of the creams. There were 47 varieties of de- odorants (as contrasted with 11 types of soap in an adjoining case) and, as these boys realized, purchasing a deodorant can be as complicated as buying a new car. In olden days there were only three types of deodorants: men's ( like Trig) Women's (Secret) and family (Ban). Now, however. there is a new fourth variety, the men's deodorant acceptable for women and children. The fourth variety evolved when Gillette watered down the scent of its men's aerosol (Right Guard) into a family deodorant. The move was a great shot under the arm for sales. The secret of Right Guard's suc- cess was that it was, "A personal deodorant." This was a direct smear at Bristol Meyers, who had been trying to crack the family deodorant market with a roll-on, Ban. Naturally Ban had its trou- bles since most family members preferred not to share a roll-on with four or five others. Right Guard, succeeded because, "noth- ing touches you but the spray," thus the resented intrusion of a "foreign underarm" is averted. The Mennen company followed Right Guard's lead and turned its Man's Spray into a family aerosol and finally Bristol Meyers, know- ing a good thing when it smells it, has come out with a family aerosol called Score. Rest of Scene Having cleared the air about family aerosols, let's briefly take a look at the rest of the deodor- ant scene. For men who refuse to use a watered-down man's deodorant like Right Guard, and have a "man's job to do" Shulton offers an aerosol called Manpower. Twenty-four hours' staying power is promised. Offering 27 hour-protection is Bristol Meyer's Trig. Not only does a man get three hours of extra care, but Trig has, "no flowery perfume." Brake Also in the man's field is the Mennen liquid roll-on, Brake. This Mennen product is "man sized." This refers to the fact that while other roll-ons like Trig merely have a radish-sized applicator ball, Brake's applicator is, "300 per cent bigger and covers the underarm completely." For men who don't care to wait for a wet roll-on to dry, Mennen also offers a dry Speed Stick. This deodorant is made "For people who can't take a shower every hour." (The deodorant industry's answer to the toothpaste for people who can't brush after every meal.) Pads For people who can't take showers, period, Associated Pro- ducts offers 5-day Deodorant Pads. Since each pad should last five days, the 75 contained in a jar should last you 375 days. Since a jar costs only $1.21, that's. less than 3c a week for complete pro- tection. Having only briefly delineated significant aspects of several major varieties of the four kinds of deodorants, it is necessary to briefly mention several unique characteristics of lesser known deodorants. Virile Male -Seaforth for the virile male who insists on a man's deodorant, "inspired from the reputation of Seaforth Scottish highlanders founded in 1255 by Alexander II. Their motto was, 'The Seaforth will never retire'." (Or perspire?) -48 hours-a deodorant cologne acceptable "for the feet." -Ever Dry-the only deodorant that goes on with a shoe polish applicator. -Ar Ex, the deodorant for people who are allergic to dorants. deo- One final warning about deo- dorants. It has been observed that in the absence of the bug killer, Raid, Right-Guard is an effective substitute pesticide. However, in the eventuality that you should run out of Right Guard, do not think the converse is true. Raid is not an effective deodorant. LEiWi% SPEA L I I love a man in Van Heusen "417" It's wild, the way his long, lean good looks come on strong in that "V-Tapered" fit. Anyone can tell he's top man on my scene when he steps out in the stepped-up styling of authentic Button-Downs or smooth Snap-Tabs. And the added attraction of Van Heusen spring fabrics and colors make him my favorite distraction. 41 VA N HEUSEN' younger by design V-Taper-for the lean trim look.
