What does our society expect of
the retired worker? "With the
exception of being a grandparent,
society defines few roles for him,"
Woodrow W. Hunter of the geron-
tology division, Institute for Hu-
man Adjustment, said recently.
After an older worker retires,
he has no ready substitute for his
eight-hours-a-day job. Concerned
about this problem, the gerontol-
ogy division is conducting re-
search to find out if the adjust-
ment to a retiree's life can be
made easier.
Discussion Groups
Since 1948, the division has been
conducting discussion group§ to
help the pre-retiree understand
the problems and situations he
will face after retirement.
Although guided by the division
to a certain extent, the members
of the groups are encouraged to
bring up their own expectations,
goals, fears and apprehensions
about their future.
