DA I LY OF F IC IA LBULLETIN Entertainment for E By ROBERT WINSHALL Proud that it is perhaps the sole campus periodical not responsible to the Board in Control of Student Publications, the Michigan Tech- nic is entering its 83rd year. Unlike publications such as The Daily, the Gargoyle, and the Mich- iganensian, the engineering mag- azine was never put under the board's jurisdiction. Nevertheless, it consistently receives top na- tional rating among magazines of its kind. "We print what would be or should be useful to the engineer," L. Karl Legatski, '66E, the new editor-in-chief, said. "The Technic tries to print things the student can't get any- where elk," he said, referring to standard features likes "Michigan Education and Research," which covers local developments, and "Progress," which tells about new technological achievements. Scientific American Although still largely technical, articles are a far cry from a typi- cal Technic dissertation in 1902 on "Differentiation of Equations in Two Variables." Prof. Robert P. Weeks of the engineering Eng- lish department thinks of the monthly magazine as a Scientific American. There are similarities not only in writing style and com- plexity of material but even in the Technic's running of an occa- sional math and puzzle page. According to Legatski, the mag- azine faces a recurrent problem of inconsistent writing sources. Three or four articles of about 2000 words appear in each monthly issue. SADDLE CLUB: Horse Show To eature Annual Riding Contests By NANCY SUNDHEIM The Crop & Saddle Club's an- nual horse show Sunday, March 14, will feature riding competi- tion and the University Mounted. Drill Team. Riders can enter six possible classes this year. Events such as the bareback competition are suit- able for advanced riders while beginners as well as advancing riders may enter events such as non-jumping class. The hunter class, which includes a complicated jumping course, and the pairs class will be judged on the ability of the horse to follow and obey instructions. The University Mounted Drill team will also perform in the show. This group of 16 skilled riders and horses will do compli- cated cotillions. "We have been practicing for this show since the beginning of the last semester," Miss McFar- lane said. In the past the riding club has held other shows as well as par- ticipated in the Michigras parade. "In the future we hope to have exchange rides with other clubs, for example from Wayne State University and the University of Detroit," Miss McFarlane said. Entry blanks for the show are available at Barbour Gymnasium, the Woman's Athletic Bldg. or the Intramural Bldg. An entrant may participate in as many classes as he desires at a cost of $1 per class. The deadline for entering the show is Monday, March 8. The show will be at Stoney Ridge farm on Liberty Road. Do- nations will help finance the per- formance.
