TUESDAY, 9 FEBRUARY 1965 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE 'SEVEN9 TUESDAY, 9 FEBRUARY 1965 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAE"I~! ~VWX a rsur. vr. r rya. c" Thinclads Improve 0 in RelaysWrestlers Continue Streak RWith 'Best Performance' By MICHAEL RUTKOWSKI Although the Wolverine track team did not make a spectcular showing in Saturday's Michigan Federation Relays, they did dis- play evidence of a g r o w i n g strength which should give Coach Don Canham some solace. This year's cindermen are ad- mittedly not as strong as Mich- igan teams of the past and Can- ham has used the often repeated phrase that "this is a rebuilding year," so that no one will expect too much from his young team. Canham, however, has been known to prefer to bring along his men slowly and to peak them for the big one, the Big Ten Cham- pionships. Last Saturday's meet,, according to. Canham, showed that several of his men are gradually improving to the point where Wis- consin doesn't look like a sure winner at the championships in Champaign on March 5-6. Brown Places The Wolverine coach was es- pecially pleased with dashman Willie Brown who "looked great" in finishing second to teammate Dorie Reid who ran a :06.3 in the 60-yard dash. Brown was bothered with injuries all last season and appears to finally have overcome them. Highly-regarded sophomore Dave Cooper added a fourth in the event. The Wolverines also finished 1-2-4 in the shot put as another sophomore, Jack Harvey, came through with a big effort of 54'8" to give him a second place behind Bill Yearby who won with a heave of 55'8%." Fred Lambert got off a throw of 52'5%" for fourth place. George Canamare could only get a fourth in the pole vault but in doing so he went over the 14- foot mark. If Canamare continues to soar over this height consis- tently Canham wilt have found a cure for at least one sore spot. Hurdles Improve The hurdles appeared to be an- other weakness at the beginning of the season but John Henderson and Roy Woodton are changing that. Henderson got only a fourth in the 65-yard high hurdles but his :08.2 clocking came in only his second meet of the season. Wood- ton was doing very well in the preliminaries of the 60-yard low By SCOTT BLECH wrestler and, as a result, can give anoetroble."
