4e PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY SATURDAY, 6 F'EBRtARY 1965 PAGE TWO SATURDAY. 6 FEBRUARY 196~ TEENAGE ORCHESTRA: Interlocehen Arts Academy To Perform Trimester Strikes Spring,' But Not 'Michigras' '66 Hill Auditorium will resound to music of the 100-member, teenage symphonic orchestra of the Inter- lochen Arts Academy tomorrow at 3 p.m. in a free concert. The academy is an outgrowth of Interlochen National Music Camp, a lakesideisummer camp near Traverse City founded in 1928 by Dr. Joseph E. Maddy. The academy, created in 1962, makes Interlochen a year-round arts center for young people, and the first boarding high school in the country for youth talented in music, art, drama and dance. Maddy and Thor Johnson, di- rector of the academy, will con- duct the orchestra in works by H a y d n, Debussy, Hindemuth, Wagner and Rimsky-Korsakov. Maddy is one of the pioneers in music education in America. He conceived, organized and conduct- ed the first National High School Orchestra in Detroit in 1962. From this evolved his now world-famous National Music Camp, which started as a summer home for his National High School Orches- tra in 1926. It was the first music camp in America. Johnson was the first American- born, American-trained conductor ever appointed by a major orches- tra in the United States. He has served as music director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and organized his own unique professional ensemble, The Chi- cago Little Symphony, in 1959. Johnson has been choral conduc- tor for the Ann Arbor May Fes- tival, leading the 325-voice choral union, internationally known solo- ists, and the Philadelphia Orches- tra. He has been the director of the Interlochen Arts Academy since September 1964. By JOSHUA BARLEY Trimester has shortened the calendar and squeezed out the warm months of spring-but it won't scratch Michigras, the spon- sors declare. The coordinating vice-presidents of the Michigan Union and Wom- en's League yesterday dispelled the notion that the bi-annual spring carnival would be cancelled be- cause of the shortened calendar. The next Michigras year will be 1966. William Kotila, '65, and Gail Howes, '66N, said that the 'event has become such an integral part of University life that we've decid- ed to continue it." Weekends such as Michigras and Homecoming are important "for they offer the stu- dent an outlet to his studies," Miss Howes explained. Aids Charity that other facilities are being sought in order to include either, a dance or a celebrity perform- ance. Additional space appears to be the biggest problem in stagingI the event, according to Miss Howes. In past years, Michigras has; utilized space outdoors, including the area adjacent to Yost Field House. Although adjusting to the calen- dar's terms, the two student vice- presidents forsee the eventual changeover of the carnival from' a spring to summer affair.
