I4 By The Associated Press WASHINGTON - Don Wert's seventh-inning home run follow- ing an error by Fred Valentine on Earl Wilson's fly ball to center broke upa tight ball game last night as the Detroit Tigers de- feated the Washington Senators 8-3. Norm Cash and OrlandorMcFar- lane homered in the Tigers' five- run eighth and Willie Horton and Wilson added triples. Wilson and Frank Kreutzer were tied 1-1 in matching three-hitters with two out in the Detroit sev- enth when Wilson flied to center and Valentine dropped the ball. Wert's fifth homer made it 3-1. The Tigers tore into Casey Cox and Dick Lines in the eighth. Cash led off with his 17th homer, Al Kaline singled, Horton tripled, and after Mickey Stanley grounded out, McFarlane hit his fifth homer. Wilson tripled and Wert doubled off Lines for another run, Yanks Flog Birds j NEW YORK-Joe Pepitone and1 Roger Maris walloped two-run homers and rookie Fritz Peterson pitched a six-hitter as the NewI York Yankees nipped Baltimore 4-1 last night.3 Boog Powell gave the Orioles an early lead when he whacked his 25th homer into the upperj deck in right field leading off in the fourth inning. Jim Palmer, trying for his 13th victory, protected the lead until1 the sixth. Bobby Richardson, lead- ing off, singled over second. After Jake Gibbs forced Richardson at second, Pepitone hit his 26th homer, giving New York the lead. Cards Slay Phils ST. LOUIS-Larry Jaster per- mitted just two singles through the first eight innings but needed ninth-inning help from Nelson Briles as St. Louis downed Phila- delphia 3-2 last night. Jaster had a 3-0 lead going intot the ninth, but Johnny Briggs tag- ged his first pitch for a home run. After Cookie Rojas and Johnny Callison singled, Briles came on and got slugger Rich Allen to hit into a double play, Rojas scoring. Briles ended the inning by strik- ing out Tony Taylor. Lou Brock slammed a 425-foot homer off Jim Bunning after Jas- ter singled in the third. The Card- inals got their third run on con- secutive doubles by Orland Ce- peda and Mike Shannon in the sixth. Astros Mangle Cubs CHICAGO - A double by Ron Davis broke up a wild battle of home runs yesterday as the Hous- ton Astros came from behind with a five-run flurry in the top of the ninth for a 8-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs. The victory broke Houston's nine-game losing streak. Davis' two-bagger scored Bob Lillis, who had doubled, with the winning run after catcher John Bateman's second home run had tied the game at 5-5. . The Cubs unloaded four homers, two by rookie catcher Randy Hundley and one each by Ron Santo and Adolfo Phillips. Hous- ton countered with three, the two by Bateman and one by Rusty Staub. Reds Edge Giants CINCINNATI - Vada Pinson singled home relief pitcher Sammy Ellis with the tie-breaking run in the seventh inning, boosting Cin- cinnati to a 3-2 victory over San Francisco last night. With the game tied 2-2 and one out in the seventh, Ellis singled, went to second when Bob Bolin walked Tommy Harper and scored one out later as Pinson singled to right field. F18 THIRD GIRL NEEDED for Fall andj By The Associated Press ATLANTA -- Bobby Bragan's stormy career with the Braves came to an end yesterday when he was fired as Atlanta manager and replaced by Billy Hitchcock. The change, long expected, was made in an attempt to get the Braves out of the second division in the National League, General Manager John McHale said. "We owe it to the fans of At- lanta to finish just as high as we can,", McHale said. "We waited this long, hoping Bobby could get the club moving. All the evidence pointed.to the fact that he couldn't." Hitchcock, who managed the Baltimore Orioles in the American League in 1962 and 1963, took over with the Braves in seventh place, 121/2 games out of the lead. Logical Choice The 50-year-old baseball veteran had been considered Bragan's probable successor ever since he was hired as an Atlanta coach last winter. "I don't plan to make any startl- ing changes," Hitchcock said. "I just found out I was the manager when I was awakened at 7:40 this morning."~ Hitchcock~ said he hopes to bol- ster the Braves' struggling pitch- ing staff by "putting confidence U M. in my pitchers, and giving them the responsibility." Pitching problems plagued Bra- gan all season, and he has been the target of Atlanta fans' boos for weeks. He also was unpopular with Milwaukee fans last season before the Braves left Wisconsin and moved to Dixie. Bragan, also fired as manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cleveland Indians, was in his fourth season with the Braves. They finished sixth in 1963, fifth in 1964 and fifth again last year despite what is considered one of baseball's hardest-hitting teams. "Nobody likes to be fired, but this was no surprise," said the 48-year-old Bragan. "Nobody ever treated me any better than the Braves, although our experience in Milwaukee and Atlanta was a stormy one." Winter to share new luxury apt.
